[FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.]
LONDON, November 25th.
BLATCHFORD. SHAW.
It is not often that I can register my approval of the utterances of Robert Blatchford, but like many others I have now to admit that his warning five years ago of German designs against England was accurate. And again this week we have to record with satisfaction that ho has administered to that literary mounto- bank, George Bernard Shaw, about the finest trouncing that has ever boen administered to the Fabian lover of the limelight, Shaw has issued through a new review a pamphlet that he is pleased to call Commonsense about the War." In it ho lets himself go as an Irish foreigner in his usual amusement of sneering at the "hypocrisy of England, and he proceeds to argue that we wanted war and made war, that the Germans simply followed our lead, and so forth. True, he goes on to advocate seeing the thing through to the end, but he has incidentally provided the enemy with some fine matter for editing and circulating in neutral countries to show how perfidious and hypocritical England is Shaw alone, of course, is the man of dramatic instinct, clear insight and unswerving honesty combined with true sensitiveness of feeling and unbiased view point. That, one would suppose, is something like the estimate by Shaw of Shaw. In reality he has that combination most dangerous in a man of brains--the anti-national bias and the most colossal egotism seen in our time. Therefore it is refreshing to hear Blatch ford, after tearing the Shavian argument to shreds and exposing its fallacies, its untruths and sheer follies, concluding with these words, We are overborne with sorrow for the dead and wounded. We are all of us enxiously striving to discover 6000 way in which we can be a help to our country and of service to humanity. And in the midst of the fury and the blood and tears a bumptious Merry-Andrew, hungry for more notoriety,
calls the
upon nations to listen to his cracked laughter and his reckless slanders and perversions of the truth." He is a fit mate for the gentle Keir Hardie, who down in Wales has had the temerity to tell his constituente that the Kaiser is not a bad sort of fellow and that he does go to the trenches with his mon, which is different from King George. Keir also allows himself some speers at the German atrocities and some baseless slanders at our own troops. When his indignant Liberal colleague from Merthyr, Mr. Edgar Jones, brought these mischievous and poisonous statements to the attention of the House of Commons he was informed by the Government that they intended to treat them with con- lempt." But the Germans don't so treat them. They are circulating them abroad as proofs of England's wickedness and weakness, and all the time these enemies of our country sleep snugly in their beds, No wonder a doctor friend of mine, who escaped from Germany the other day, declared on arrival that the first duty of the Government was to shoot Shaw and Hardie, However, the voters of Merthyr will have an opportunity of shunting Keir into oblivion at the election and even trade unionists tell me with unnecessarily pointed language that he will not be missed.
THE PLEA FOR “MORE LICHT.”.
Probably the most fatuous thing the Government has done, after the placing of the Press Bureau in charge of a Chancery lawyer only accustomed to dealing with affidavits," as Mr. Tim Healy happily puts it, is the official recognition Its chiefs are showing to the *** committee of all parties that aims to spread the light here and in neutral countries. The only thing needed to secure that would be to give some reason- able facilities for the distribution of newà through the newspapers. But it appears to be the opinion in Whitehall that anyone on earth is more capable of handling news, and of understanding the psychology of the influences that make public opinion, than the responsible men who have had a life training in newspaper work. So they will proceed to distribute another shipload or two of academic tracts and pamphlets among university professors up and down the earth, in the sublime belief

unblushing perversions of fact. There are some things our opponents understand better than we do or at any rate than the bureaucrats who inhabit Whitehall and its immediate vicinity. THE RESULTS OF SUPPRESSING THE WAE CORRESPONDENT,
Perhaps the most serious of the results of the prohibition of responsible war correspondents is the oblivion of much brave action and the withholding of recognition from many regiments. The London Scottish got a good show for their gallantry and their numbers grew accord ingly at the recruiting office, but such regiments as the North Lancashires have only come into the limelight by accident, even though their valour has been second to none and their efforts have been ealogised by all the chief officers in the fighting line. Trus, the men to make least of their doings are the men themselves.
A NEW JOAN OF ARC.
France has a new Joan of Arc, if the reports from the northern frontier are true.
Mario Louise Duclos was in the frontier town when her lover was brought in from the trenches to die. After he had. breathed his last she donned his uniform and took his vacant place in the engage ment that opened that night. The standard bearer was struck, but as he fell she seized the colours and rallied the wavering line, so that in the end the German position was carried
A DRAMATIC MEETING. Queer things are happening every day, in these stirring times. Here in London there was a dramatic meeting 1 a recruiting room last week. A doctor of high stending had some disagreement with his young wife some years ago and she left him, taking with her their young son Since the war the doctor has been doing service in examining recruite. Among the applicants was one whose face somehow seemed familiar, and he bore a birthmark that also roused memories. A few ques ions proved that this recruit was the doctor's own son..
