THE Year 1914 now drawing to its close will loom large in the bistory of the world to the end of time. Nearly half the year has been oversadowed by a war unparalleled both as regards the extent of the territory it affects and the numerical strength of the armed forces engaged. It is probably no exaggeration to say that upwards of twenty million men are at this moment either in actual military service or preparing for the call. The average man even yet scarcely realises how large a part of the world is officially at war. If we take a map of the world and Llot out from it all such territories, it would surprise most of us to see how small a part of the globe remains. In Europe, we have Great Britain, France, Russia, Belgium, Austria-Hungary, Turkey and Poringni no war. In Asia the whole of the vast extent of Russian lerritory to the
