The Far East stands in the front ranks as one of the most promising and fertile fields for British enterprise now that the German trade is cut off. We have only to consider the enormous extont of China, horvast and: teeming population rivalling in numbers that of the whole of Europe, and their cagerness to, obtain the material advantages enjoyed by Western peoples, in order to reafise that such a market is well worth studying and cultivating The Germans have long realised it, and have concentrated an enormous amount of cared on the development of their Far Eastern trade. They have fed Japanese industries by providing the paraphernalia wherewith Carry them on, and in China they have Besedulously seizing every opportunity to encourage the use of European manu- factured goods (made in Germany). Many of the articles regularly supplied by Germany to Japan in recent years have now become absolute necessities, and their discontinuance is little short of & calamity to their users. How small za the chance of that trade recovering depends, mainly on the thility of British manufacturers to profit by the situation. An immense factor in their favour will be Germany's, loss of Kiao- chow, which she was steadily developing as a commercial base, whence she could secure a large measure of control over European trade in China. This, with Tientsin as a distributing centre, is responsible for the very great increases in Germany's exports to the Far East of late years, and her growing success in her competition with us. Their ascendancy in the province of Shantung. by virtue of a Treaty which was never ratified by the Chinese Government, is notorious, and has been the subject of

mentioned the intelligent enterprise displayed by German manufacturers, who make a serious study of their Oriental markets, and not only make a point of supplying what is needed, but allow a suitable appropriation for the purpose of bringing their productions to the notice of likely consumers. The result is that they have secured a very profitable trade in that part of the world. All this is now suspended, and it remains for British enterprise to keep the ball rolling, and thus and an outlet for their activities which cannot at present bé devoted to the Continent.
