The Kaiser had determined that the Belgians should be driven from their treiches, and called for volunteers. Tho Wurtembergers offered themselves a. willing sacrifices.

was too close to the Germans to be pleasant. At one point, when the officer thought himself free of danger on a tramway car, 15 German soldiers and two officers boarded it, but took no notice of their ragged companion. He stayed onc night at & form. where 11 German officers and 30 men were billeted, and for safety hid in the attic next to the granary. On the following morning he heard the soldiers come up to the granary, but they merely collected the corn and passed on without inspecting the attic. Every day the sound of artillery Giring was audiblu in the distance, and the officer waited on, hoping for the advance of the Allies. The firing, however, seemail to come ne nearer, and he decided to get to England at 'oll costs.

HOW DO THEY KNOW THE NAMES OF OUR OFFICERS 1
The following is from an aide-de-camp to a General commanding one of the divisions in the north of France or Flanders:
Our men are very wonderful, and they have to stand so much.
We captured a German officer yesterday. Asked whether he was glad or sorry to be taken, he replied, For myself glad; for my country sorry."

Much of the eridence was taken in private, as its disclosure would have been contrary to the public interest. It revealed, however, that Lody was one of the ablest and, most energetic men ever entrusted by Germany with work of espionage. Trench by trench was stubbornly defended, until they came within sixty yards of where our artillery were hidden. Suddenly the British lines dispersed to either side leaving a huge gap through which the Guards poured, wildly cheering. AN OFFICER'S ESCAPE.
-SIX WEEKS ON FOOT IN THE WAR AREA.
An officer of a Highland regiment who recently returned to London has spent an eventful six weeks in eluding the German invaders in a part of France which is still overrun by them.
The officer, who had received a severe injury to his head; had be in hospital for a month when became known that the Germans intended to remove all the wounded soldiers in the building. On hearing this the officer left the ward by the window and hid in the garden, his absence passing unnoticed. That night he succeeded in getting rid of his uniform and stayed as the collage of a labourer, who provided him with some workaday clothes. i Ha endeavoured next morning to get to Lille, but all the bridges and level cross ings out the railway were guarded by Germans, and the officer decided to abandon this method of getting out of the German zone.
