MOVING PICTURE SHOWS IN
TTED FAR EAST.
The United States Vice-Consill-General, A. E. Carleton, of Hongkong, furnishes sping interesting particulars concerning. the motion-Alm trade in China. writes:-
He
The development of the snowing-picture business in China is proceeding slowly, and the various promoters are not finding that the undertaking it present is vers: remunerative, yet, at the same time, they rre.sanguine as to the possibilities in the not-far-distant future: As a matter of] fact, the moving-picture shows cannot have the sain success in the Far East. especially in China, as in other parts of the world without an immense outlay of The inoney for educational purposes. Chinese in and about the treaty ports have taken kindly to this form of enter tainment, but only after years of patient endeavour, and those living away from the coast ports, who are not in touch with western people, are scarcely aware of the existema of these shows, It thus wil! be seen at a glance that the possibilities are really sense for the developing t of a tremendous business in this ling, but My trade must be created by consistent work. Having interested The Chinese sufliciently, there is no limit to the expansion of the moving-picture shows
There are not 50 cimboatograph showa if all China and Macas, and all of these are in the treaty ports. In the Philip pines there are reported to be over 78," and the limitations have by no means beet reached. In Hongkong and Kow- loon there are only five in continuous) operation, and with a population of over half a million it seems not unlikely int in a few years this number will be more than doubled.

In this Colony the one great ditheulty seems to be a matter of price for the present rates of admission are beyond the average Chinese, and shows with popular prices have not been experimented with heavy expenses for operating them it beyond a tentative attempt, which unfer does not sem possible to Jessen the AMLO
Continu- tunately proved a failure. This, how ever, was some time ago, before the admission charges very much. Chiness in general learned to appreciate performances of, say, one hour each their value. It might be tried again with would probably not be popular in Hong kong, and therefore the present method in general must be adhered to.
far better results.
The chief hindrance to u greater development of these forms of entertain ment appears to exist in the Chinese themselves, for they do not care ro, participate in making films of scenes customs, etc, of their own country. Of course, this objection has been ing measure done away with in the treas ports, where they have come in touch with western civilisation to a certain degree Even: in Hongkong and Kowloon this superstition is still pronounced. The writer bas in mind an American company which worked for two months with sonic. Chinese actors on a Chinese story, the principal point of objection bring, that the leading man was strongly averse to He was being placed in a coffin astonished to find himself alive after his incarceration, and in fact was so pleasvi over his restoration to life that hel laugher, thereby spoiling the film in its most tragic part
It is such ingrained antipathy that s handicaps the moving picture makers in China. It thus moans a long educational propaganda before success is reached.
→FILM PREFERENCES AND CONT, As a matter of fact, the films now generally in use in Hongkong and in the frenty ports are over 40 per cent, second- hand films, and of the total in use it is estimated that 20 per cent. only are American. The short pieces are 400 feet or 500 feet in length. Most of these seconds are imported from Europe; and aone of these occasionally are years old, which have gone the rounds of Europe, eventually finding their way to the Fax East.
It is not uncommon to pay only 85 gold for a complete film of American production, whereas the export price for these films was originally 7 cents gold per foot. The customary price in Hong- kung, the writer is informed, is about G cents gold for new films. Under the circumstances, the market for now material here is not good, for the man- agers of the movies in Hongkong confessedly buy the end grades.
The tastes of the better-equented Chinese materially differ from those living for instance, in Canton, us was demonstrated a short time since, when the Antony and Cleopatra film had a good run in Hongkong, but in Canton was taken off die second night, as the people did not care for it. As a rule the Chinese prefer comics, historical, and war; they prefer short pictures, where there is plenty of moveme it. The drum of the western world is outside of their knowledge and understanding. It is necessary to give them films where the picture itsel is self-explanatory.
:
HIGH PRICES LIMIT. ATTENDANCE The theatre price in Hongkong are far from being popular, ranging as they du from about 35 ents geld to 75 cents gold for European Leatres and half these amounts for the Chinese theatres. As a result these shows attract only a certain class of people, and aro not for the masses. The Europeans form a sinal percentage of the audience as a general yule as they are averse to paying these
'aseounts.
Toe language question is one of some difficulty in China, and the expense of having the readings in Chinese is large foc! under the present auditions, where the number of users is limited to such a low theatres. The lack of a chain of theatres

The custom in Hongkong seems to be to the true long film nad til up the rest One of the local with short many. theatres has a sort of a variety entertain- ment as well, although pictures are the principal leature.
in mongsong un American company has been very ur some tine manufactur ing pictures at an average cost of $2,000 (gold) for films of the usual length.

If my information is correct, the proportion of American filmns seen here is small, and the reason appears to be that the producers do not give what the local As before indicated, market demands.
the Chinese demand movement in every picture-heavy tragedy or love pictures do not appeal to them; they want all of the happenings the world over, No doubt 1150 American manufacturers produce these films, but somehow or other they are not seen here to any great extent.
