To-day's Paris communiqué says:-

To-day's Petrograd" communiqué says:— On the left bank of the Vistula, along the front of the rivers Benra and Ravku, a series of fights occurred yesterday, which at certain points assumed a serious character.

In the region of Przemysl the Austrians made a sortie in con- siderable strength, but failed lamentably, being caught in the flank and routed any prisoners were taken.

ANTI-AUSTRIAN MEETINGS THROUGHOUT ITALY,
A message from Rome states that five hundred meetings were held throughout Italy yesterday in commemoration of Oberdank, who was hanged in December, 1882, for conspiracy against the life of the Emperor Francis Joseph of Austria-Hungary, The police had a hard task in restraining, and at some places suppressing, the demonstrations, which
were everywhere of an anti-Austrian character.
The meeting at Rome was addressed by Deputy Colajanni, who
attacked Austria and Germany for their crimes against civilisation, and also by Ricciotti Garibaldi, who urged the formation of a Committed to
enroi volunteers.
An Italo-Rumanian League has been formed at Roue to strengthen
the bonds uniting the two countries.
SOUTH AFRICAN REBEL LEADER MEETS A TEALTOR'S DEATH,
LOADOR, December 20th.
5.15 p.m. telegram from Pretoria says that the rebel leader Captain
Fourie was court-martialled yesterday and shot at dawn to-day. The
death sentence on his brother, Lieutenant Fourie, was commuted to B
sentence of five years' imprisonment. Captain Fourie adopted a defiant attitude throughout, but took the responsibility for leading his young brother astray.
Both were formerly officers in the South Africam
Defence Force.

A telegram from Cairo states that the Sultan, while driving through the street to Abdin Palace, was joyously acclaimed by the populace. Thore was an imposing military display. The people also enthusiastically
cheered the officials. The town was decorated with flags.
