but to prevent misapprehension, I

think it right to advise

considering

you

the

the materials of which the

Police force is necessarily composed, I am

of opinion

that you

would do well to

take steps for their general support

in

such way you may deem proper:

Perhaps

on the whole it

would be preferable for the watchmen

to be entirely

under the control of

the Naval Storekeeper, and to be paid

for by him - which would render

them

more useful and subject to his control than

if they were considered as part of the

Active Service of the Colony.

18th August, 1840.

Sirs,

I have the honor to

acknowledge your

letter

of this

date, enclosing

a copy of one

from the Major General commanding

in which he declines continuing

to

furnish the guard heretofore posted at the Naval stores, beyond

Norfolk

Evening, at 6 o'clock

The watchmen whom

Your Excellency proposes to place, for the protection of the Naval Stores,

might certainly be under

the control

of the

Naval Storekeeper - but for

the

Watchmen to be hired and paid-

His Excellency,

S. C. Bonham, Esq. C.B.
