From the Consulate-General of Japan at Hongkong wo have received the following report which was published on the 7th inst. by the Department of War, Tokyo:-

The enemy is firing incessantly day and night. According to various reports hitherto received, the German ship Cormoran and two gunboats are believed to have lien sunk, as they have not been seen since the 3rd October.":

[The Cormoran was a new cruiser of 4,500 tons and a speed of 25.5 knots. She was built at Bremen, and her armament comprised two 6.7 inch and ten 4.1 inch guas and two submerged torpedo tubes. The gunboats are probably of the tie class. They carry 12 guns, have a displacement of 900 tous, and a speed of 13.5-knots.]

A telegram from Petrograd states that the Russian heavy artillery is carelessly bombarding Frzemysl, gradually destroying the forts and the town, where many of the houses are burning. All attempts of the Austrians to relieve the garrison have been repulsed with heavy loss.

DEATH OF SIR WILLIAM- CARINGTON.

· Four Europeau seamen, Henry Hunter, firoman; E. Hummock, scaman; Frank O'Leary, fireman; and Alex Noilion, were charged at the Marine Court yesterday with unlawfully leaving without permis sion the s.s. Shipeute lying in the harbour. Pulics Inspector McDonald stated that the master of the ship made a report to the police that the four defendants werd missing from the ship. On the previous day he (witness) was going in a tramcar along the Prays, by Arsenal Street, whom he saw the defendants standing under tha verandah of the Naval Canteen. Witness got off the car and challenged them. They admitted being the wanted men and I arrested them.

The first defendant said he left the ship to go ashore on the 4th he had leave. The second defendant said he went ashore without leave and got drunk. The third defendant said he had lease on Saturday. The fourth defendant said he went on
