Tác Indo Chin sa Tung hin, Capt L. M. Hussey, while on a voyage from Saigon to Hongkong experienced very heavy weather. The cargo was & generał one, and a quantity of deck cargo was jettisoned. About 10 p.m. on October 1st the wind and sea increased considerably, with rain and bard squalls. The vessel commenced to ship heavy water, and the deck cargo, consisting of baskets of salt eh and bags of cocoanuts, broke adrift from their lashings, They were lashed again twice during the night by the crew, but at 246 am. on the 2nd they again broke adrift, the wind and sea increasing. with heavy swells from N.E. and E. As the heavy basicets of fish were becoming dangerous to the vessel's steering gear the Captain decided for the safety of samo to jettison the deck cargo, which was done at 4 a.m. in about Lat. 18.30deg. N... Long, 11.28deg. E. During all day of thio 2nd inst. the vessel was shipping heavy water fore and aft, but the weather eased up about 10 p.m. and "Barometer Squalls ceased, Oil leaking from the baskets of fish made it impossible to secure them,

A BANISHEE SENT TO PRISON,

The thickly populated West Point dis trict has long been reputed to be the favourite haunt of the thief and the week- end depredators from Canton, but there has been an appreciable decrease in petty. larceny cases there of late, under Inspector. P. O'Sullivan's régime.

A likely burglary was prevented a couple of days ago, when a Chinese was found in "the staircase on the first floor of a house in Queen's Road West. He was suspected, and a Jukong opportunely arrived. He told the occupier of this floor that he wanted to soe his friend Ah Sum." who lived on tho upper floor. Inside the man's jacket was found an electric torch and two handser- chiefs. At the Magistracy the complain- ant declared that he did not know the defendant, and the latter, in turn, de- clined to know the complainant. Defend- ant added that he was not on the premises to see Ah Sum at all. The police assaulted him and made him say it. He came down from Canton only a few days ago. Inspector O'Sullivan proved two previous convictions, and that the defendant had once been banished, his time having now expired. Defendant strenuously denied having been, banished, but his Worship, roticing that on the finger-print list ono. of the finger joints was missing, asked the man to hold up his hand, whereupon it was seen that the joint of the fourth inger was missing. His Worship ordered the man to be sent to gaol for three months, with hard labour.

SANITARY BOARD.

At the meeting of the Sanitary Board yesterday, Mr. G. N. Orte presiding, the reply of the Government to the letter con- veying the motion adopted by the Board at the last meeting that special facilities should be granted the employees of the Sanitary Department who are membera of the Hongkong Volunteer Corps or Volunteer Reserves" was laid on the table. The reply merely knowledged the. letter, and recapitulated the duties of the Volunteers.
