THE RICHEST SOURCE OF TANNIN. Some of the acacia trees are recom mended by the Department of Agriculture na having especial value for cultivation. in the United States. About 450 species aro known, of which about 300 species belong to Australia, and the remainder. aro chiefly distributed in Asia, Africa and western America. The chief product VE

at present is tanbark. Australian species yield 24 to 48 por cont. of tannin, while oak and chestnut species, the woods chiefly employed in the United States, supply only 8 to 13 per cent.. Some acacias, kriving on three inches of rain, are of value for-reclaiming sandy and semi-desert lands. Acacia timber is beautiful in grain and very durable, and the hard, close-grained and tough product. of the best species is comparable to walnut and rosewood. Besides the timber, there are various by-products,. such as gum arable, cutch and other gums, and, the perfume of the so-called cassic species, much used at. Grassig France

A POWERFUL WIND-MOTOR. - The explosion motors that have replaced. wooden windmills in draining parts of Holland are giving way to wind-motors of strel. The largest existing motor of this kind, lately put to work at Harlingen in Friesland, is 60 feet in diameter, bas steel sails, mounted on a steel tower, and is credited with a pumping capacity of G0,000 to 70,000 cubic feet of water an hour. It drains 1,850 a cres of lowland.

THE GREATEST MUSEUM FISH..

The marine sunfish" (Mola mola) is one of the queerest animals known, having its body lopped off just behind its perpendi cular dorsal and anal fins, and being as high as long. With a tiny mouth, an even stranger part of its structure is its diminutive spinal cord, which: Gensures considerably less than an inch in a list a yard long. A specimen of this species taken three or four years ago off the coast of southern California was ten feet one inch in length and nearly eleven feet in height, and lately mounted in the American Museum of Natural History in New York, is believed to be the largest fish of any kind ever shown in a muɛgim. The specimen is supposed to have been more than twenty years old when taken

A HEAT-STORAGE RESERVOIR.

The heat-storing apparatus of a Stock- holm inventor, which may be charged frem electric stations during periods of lig load, contains a cuil of resistance wire enclosed in heat-storing material, which in turn is surrounded by heat- insulating substance. A damper may be opened to permit radiation from the top when it is desired to use the heat. A radiating covering encases the whole apparatus, and air passages through the hout storing material aid in radiating the heat. In a trial apparatus, having a capacity of about one-half cubic yard,
