Davis wrote to Mr. John
Johnston as follows.

Her Majesty's Government
desired to purchase
"the house built by you and now
occupied
at
His Excellency's
"residence, for the purpose of its being
converted into
Court house.
"As in all other similar
cases the question
of the
compensation
"to be awarded has been submitted
to Arbitration. His Excellency has appointed the
Acting Surveyor
General to represent the Crown, and
"desires me to request that you
will
appoint a
person
to act on

"with power to the arbitrators to select

a third person as

"they disagree. His Excellency is anxious to forward the result of their arbitration by the next mail to England, and wishes it to be done with as little delay as possible."
In conformity with this request
Mr.
Johnston appointed his former Agent Arbitrator on his behalf, and, together with the Acting
Surveyor
General being unable
to
agree,
selected
an umpire,
the result of this arbitration was that the compensation for Mr.
Johnston's property was duly valued
at $9000.
