STRANDING OF THE "HADDON--

FALL"

FINDING OF NAVAL COURT...

Following is the fading and Order of a Naval Court hold at the British Consulate General at Kobe on the 7th day of September, 1014, to investigate the circumstances altending the stranding of the British str. Haddon Hall, ON 106,970, of the port of West Hartlepool, on a rock N.E. of Kutaka Taland in the Okinawa Group at 3.20 a.m. vm 25th July, 19147-A

The Haddon Hall was a steam vessel schooner rigged, of 1,650.51 tons registered tonnage, O.N. 106,979, and belonging to the Port of West Hartlepool.

It appears from the evidence given before this Court that she sailed from Cardiff on or about the 23rd May this year for Kobe with a cargo of coal, with a crew of 28 hands all told and that she arrived at Port Said on the 9th of June, at Safago on the 11th idom and Port Sudan on the 18th idem. She left Port Sudan on the

July in crossing the Arabian sea during the south-west monsoon, during which sho rolled heavily but was completely under control; that fine weather and favourable, conditions continued from then onwards until 23rd July. On that day at 11.45 am. she passed the Tauchishima Lighthouse, south-east of the Okinawa Group, the lighthouse bearing N.W. by half west, distant twelve miles, the course being north-east half north in making for the Ki Channel; that the weather at that: time was fine with a fresh breeze from the north-cast. During the course of tho afternoon, the wind began to freshen and increased continuously in violence, and at about 9 a.m. on the following morning, the 24th, the ship became unmanageable owing to the force of the gale. On the 'night of the 23rd the Master had altered the course to east-north-east, in order to get her further from the land. Through out the 24th the wind continued to shift

These conditions continued until about 1. on Saturday, 25th July, when the wind suddenly fell light for about five minutes, thus enabling the ship to answer her helm and her head was brought round to north-east After this tall, the wind sprang up again from the South, increasing to a gale of greater violence than before, with blinding rain rendering everything invisible even close to the ship. The Court considers that while in this regard there may have been an error of judgment, there was not the slightest neglect at this time or at any subsequent period on the part of the Master or, crow, and that all hands did their utmost under the circumstances to avoid a calamity which was inevitable.

It appears that immediately after the stranding, all efforts to get her off the reef were of no avail, the propeller had become useless by the loss of three blades, and owing to the continual bumping, the bottom was pierced and the ballast tanks filled and emptied with the rise and fall of the tide.

The Court sets no reason to censure the conduct of the Master or any of the crew, and it desires to place on record its appreciation of the work done by the Engineers and firemen, and of the conduct of the Chief Officer, Chief Engineers and cook while remaining on the stranded ship, which was all the time in dangerous position, and cut off from communications with shore, until August 24th; and that proper discipline appears to have been maintained throughout, and the ship appears to have been well-found and euficiently manned and searworthy. at the time of her departure from Port Sudan, and that the ship mems to have been provided with proper charts.

The expenses of this Court, fixed at £5 98. Od. are approved by the Court and shall be paid by the Master. It is recom mended that due allowances be paid by the Master to those members of the crew who have been detained at Kobe for the purposes of this enquiry..
