McCulloch has borne the heavy Cout which a charge of these lots (upon Rungalow stands) without receiving any Return whatever. During that period he has expressed frequently his wish to be entirely relieved by the Government, of the property, if the payment of the Land Rent continued imperative.

For a time it was understood that the Government could not accept this sacrifice, under the circumstances. Last year the Colonial Treasurer intimated that a similar relief had been granted in respect of several properties, and in the following paragraph of our letter above alluded to, we conceived that we had intimated our wish to that effect and adopted the ordinary procedure, viz: "We have therefore to beg that unless the matter be allowed to rest until we receive McCulloch's instructions on the subject, His Excellency the Governor will be pleased to Resume these Lots:" without expense (alluding to the payment of the then due Rent) to McCulloch.

Having received no intimation of any other particular mode of notifying the lessee of the Land to Government being required, we have until the present acted under the full impression that the Notification above was sufficient. We shall extremely regret if our ignorance has rendered Mr. McCulloch liable for another heavy claim, and we would most respectfully and earnestly request...
