THE TRIAL OF MADAME CAILLAUX;
[FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT]
PARIS, July 24th,
In spite of the importance of other subjects, Parisians attention has been solely concentrated all the week on Mme. Caillaux's trial for the murder of M. Gaston Calmette, late editor of Le Figaro.
There has been no lack of excitement since Monday last, both inside and outside the Court, when the sensa tional trial began. Last Sunday the prisoner who was glad the day had at last arrived for her trial-was transferred from the prison of St. Lazare, of which she had been on inmate since the 18th of March last the day of the murder-to the Conciergerie, adjoining the Palais de Justico or Law Courts, The measures taken to provide both exemplary ventila tion inside the over-crowded Court, as well as general order, reflect great credit on those who had charge of them. On making her first appearance in Court last Monday, Madame Caillaux was the centre of attraction; her conduct was that of a brave woman until a few days ago, when she succumbed to emotion through her nerves becoming overstrung. Her replies were distinctly heard by ones and all, while she had an appropriate and quick reply to all questions put to-ber. -The motives of the cine are familar to all by this time. She had nothing new to add and contented herself with recon- structing the old story for the benefit of the Judge and jury. She admitted that she lost her head, unable to bear the Figaro calumnies against her husband no longer fearing that M. Calmette, who had two other private letters in his bad bio in his

Me Cheru, representing the family of M. Calmette, are out of the way severe. This was particularly so when on the third day of the trial, barrister Chenu charged M. Caillaux with profaning the grave dug by his wife. The violent scenes of last Tuesday resulted in the Public Prosecutor declaring that the documents which had been taken from M. Calmette's pocket book after his death and given into the custody of M. Poincaré, President of the French Republic, were forgeries! This declaration was made on behalf of the Government.

Caillaux was accused of complicity in various scandals. By so worrying the life out of him it was hoped to prove M. The intouse and foverish interest characteris-verdict may, however, be attenuated in several ways. The jury, for instance, may reply "yes" to the question of homicide and not to that of premeditation; in that case it would be simple "murder,"

The presiding judge observed that the incident was closed. "It is not closed," Me. Labori retorted. "I will return to it.". The whole story is one of passion and tragedy. The fourth day was again, full of sensational incidents. Ex-Premier and Finance Minister Caillaux yesterday (4th day) mnade a passionate declaration of love for his wife, while his divorced wife, Mme.
