**THE TIMES” AGONY.

RECORDS OF A CENTURY,

FIGURES OF ROMANCE IN DISGUISE.

THE HONGKONG DAILY PRESS, MONDAY, AUGUST 8BD, 1914.

Since the days of Richardson and the Liaisons Dangereuses, dozens of novelists bave adopted the opistolary method of telling a story; it has possibilities in the revelation of character, as Choderles de Laolos best proved,

of all those

who tried it such We think, however, that nobody has yet written a novel all in agony advertisements from The Times. It would be worth trying; for what are these advertisements, in that celebrated column headed "Por- sonal" but brief letters from one unknown tó another, each unknown

becoming botter known as you read the column day by day? A history of the agony columns would contain, thus, a series of enigmatic romancas, thrilling to. the curious person with detective tastes. We imagino no better training for the ambitious inquiry agent.

Unfortunately, such an expert in agony would, we fear, mies to-day that continu- ance of correspondence, necessary if one is to piece together broken bits of the hearts that display their fractures. In old days, agonists went on, week after week sometimes year after year in pursuit of what they had lost, or what: they hoped to gain. The most agonizing specimens were industriously collected, some years ago, in a small book which gave the best of them for the whole period between 1800 and 1870. During that time we can trace sets of appeals telling the same story, under various disguises. With infinite patience, with an English obstinacy now rarer, apparently, then it WAS.

lovers, half-hidden

separated fathers, prodigal sons, and the other eternal figures of romance, exhaled their flowery complaints in view of the public. It was possible, therefore, to gather a reasonable theory, from so much evidence, of the true state of the case concerning these sufferers. Nowadays, we fear that the agonist does not linger in his pain.

THE AGONY OF 1914

A comparison of the old agonies with the advertisements of to-day has con vinced us, too, that the personalities of

the famous column tend-more and more to be of a pecuniary, rather than of a passionate, order. If we were asked to compose a typical agony of the year 1914 more than a full century since the column started we should give, in

illustration, this:-

Professional man sick of living in town would like large house in country with large income to keep up some. O please help!

Or, again, this :-

Young man, weary of work in no office, Books any sort of remunerative adventure Would risk al, provided he got paid a lot. Gon: Alpinist Can drive motor-car or motor-bicycle. Some experience of flying.

Who will help?

Nevertheless, we cannot help regretting the obsolete agony. In an agony we like to find a paroxysm.

It doesn't matter about the grammar, which is, we notice, frequently very bad from 1800 to 1870 what we cok is emotion, not good English. In these days, indeed, it was held no emotion ever could or should be English. That is why s fine paroxysm of 1851 roads thus :--

William, thou wilt go to sen-thou shalt go; but O Return, and receive the blessing of a heart-brolton father, of a heart-broken Mother! O my son William, my son, my son William! Would God I had died for thee, O. William, my son, my son !

We cannot show the change better than by giving a few extracts in chronological order:

02). Incognita's elegant and well- composed Epistle, of the 19th instant, has had all the impression that possibly could be expected; another, with real name and place of abode, may be safely ventured. A immediate intercourse is earnestly requested by Leander,

In this manner, with bared neck and dishevelled hair, beating the breast did the Kemble rouse the pit.... But we doubt whether his poor mother fetched" William by it. The boy had been reading nautical romances. Captain Marryat was but a William's father, who few years dead. was, no doubt, a Samuel-Butlerian father of the instructive type, made classical by James Mill, had warned the boy that if he ever so much as mentioned the sea to him again, he should receive the wrong end of a knotted rope on. ..
