SOME BUBBER SHARES AND RESULTS.
THE HONGKONG DAILY PRESS, THURSDAY, JULY 30TMя, 1914.
During 1013 the increase in the produc Lion of plantation rubber, and the consequent decline in the price obtained by plantation companies for their products, continued unchecked, says writer in the Economist. The process is still going on, and some recent figures, received by the Malny States Information Agency from the Colonial Secretary at Singapore make interesting reading. The comparison month by month of the exports of plantation rubber from Singa- pore for the first five months of each of the past three years runs as follows:--

Total ......1,772 -4,001 7,020 These figures include transhipment of rubber from various places in the neigh- buúrhood of the Straits Settlements, such as Borneo, Java, Sumatra, and the non-federated Malay States, as well as rubber actually exported from the colony, but do not include rubber exports from the Federated Malay States them- selves. This information gives some idea of the rate at which the increase, is continuing, but for the moment we are concerned with the trend of affairs during 1913, and propose to examine the results of 16 companies whoso, reports for the year ending December 31st, 1913, have been published
j
The increase in the aggregate produc. tion is equal to, roughly, 31 per cent., aa against approximately 40 per cent, in 1912. The slump in the average prices obtained is even more marked than in the previous year. Only three companies attained an average price of as per lb., whereas if we go back to 1910 we find that in that year all bus two obtained an average of well over 8. per lb., the average in two oases approximating to 88. Comparing the list for these two years, it may be said that prices generally have declined by more than 50 per cent., and in some instances by nearly 75 per: cent. As regards individual increases in production, proportionately the greatest are recorded by United Serdang, London Asiatic, Anglo-Malay, and Damansara.
Turning to the question of profits, expenses, and dividends, one company alone has escaped a decline in net profits, and in nearly every case the drop is of serious dimensions. of the larger concerns, Linggi and Highlands and Lowlands, show the greatest. fall. ing
off, the net
the profits of Former having dropped from £187,014 in 1811 to £89,650 în 1913. With the single exception of United Serdang, all divi- dends are reduced. This company, thanks to forward contracts, obtained an average price per lb. of rubber harvested. far in advance of that obtained by any other member of our list. This fact, together with a 50 per cent addition to the production, assured higher earnings. It we take the reports of the same com panies for the previous year we find the iividend list to be far more satisfactory. For in respect of that year there were five reductions in dividend rates against eight increases. Reductions this year are drastic as well as general; Rubber companies are faced with a competitive struggle, in which the
weaker are threatened with ruin, and the stronger concerns are straining every nerve to cut down toets. Many of the reports draw attention to the directors' efforts in this direction. Some of the directors have succeeded in a marked degree From those reports which give
cost of production we have taken a few. exemplary instances:-

The continued anxiety of the rubber position and the certainty of dividend reductions have naturally caused further depreciation in rubber sharea. We a

e prices, as the world's supply of the product rapidly overtook and passed the The problem demand, was inevitable. for the investor now is whether prices as Presum- a whole have touched bottom, ably the time must come sooner or later when a readjustment between supply and. demand takes place. Production cannot increase for ever. As the price of the material descends those companies whose costs of production cannot be lowered must go to the wall and, on the other side of the equation the price in its descent will reach & point where rubber will become a-profitable raw material in industries for which it has hitherto been too expensive.
