Letter from the late Acting Chief Justice.

Pretoria, Hongkong,

16th

August, 1848.

In reply to your letter of this date,

relative to the Convict Chun Asun, who was

sentenced to transportation at the Admiralty

Sessions of January last, I have the honor

to state that he was convicted upon nearly the same evidence as Khung Khien, Nhu Cong

in my

Aching, , and Lum Aat, and that in my opinion he (Chun Asun) is as deserving of pardon as any

of the three last named.

The Council having given their full consideration

to the case of the above named Convict, the

circumstances attending whose trial and conviction were similar to those of the three Convicts referred

to in the Minutes of Council held on the 28th July last; and further, that the want of a

means on the part of his relatives to defray the expenses of a Legal Adviser alone prevented his name from being brought at the same time before the notice of the Council, His Excellency the

Governor, with the unanimous Concurrence

of the Hon'ble. Members, resolved that Her Majesty's

Most Gracious Pardon be also extended to the Convict Chun Asun, alias Amee, alias Tung

(Signed) Chas Molloy Campbell, lately Act'g Chief Justice.

To

The Honorable

Major Caine,

Colonial Secretary,

&c., &c.,

The Colonial Secretary was instructed to

prepare the requisite Proclamation, to be

published in the Government Gazette.

True Extract.

Extract from Minutes of Council.
