Neuralgia,

Nervous Breakdown

NURSE HALL, c/o Mrs. Bassett, Commercial Place, Landport, Portsmouth, Eng, writes:-"I was suffering from nervous breakdown with Internal Neuralgia, when I began a course of Phosferine. After having taken it for three or four months, I felt better than I had done for two years previously, and consider it the best tonic I have ever tried. As a remedy for all nervous disorders I think there is nothing to equal Phosferine, especially as I was given up by more than one doctor previous to taking Phosferine, and can now say I am perfectly well and strong, and have taken nothing else."

No other medicine has received such absolute proof of its extraordinary properties in restoring Shattered Constitutions, and in giving back to the prematurely aged New Life and Energy.

ANGLO-PERSIAN OIL COMPANY.

THE POLITICAL ASPECT.

MAD CHINESE RITES,

SUICIDES PROM BAORED MOUNTAIN.

Mr. Leslie H. Gabb is at present staying at the Astor House (BBVB a recent issue of the China Press) and would like nothing so much as that some steady, reliable person who would take no un necessary risks would give him a ride in a real autoniobile over real roads. He is Western by birth and so much up-bringing as can be crowded into thirteen years, but for the rest is about as good a Szechuanese as could be imagined.

Addressing an extraordinary general mesting of the shareholders of the Anglo- Persian Oil Company, Ltd., in mail week held for the purpose of considering resolu- tions to increase the capital of the come pany and to alter the articles of associa tion, Mr. C. W. Wallace, presiding, said: Some of you may have noticed in the Times that an article which appeared on Wednesday last drew attention to the possible political difficulties which may arise from the Government's participation in our undertaking. Although I am not in a position to know what the Govern ment views on this point may be, I think it desirable that I should say something as to our own views on this matter. Tho political aspect of the question may, think, be separated under three heads viz., (1) danger of damage to our proper ties by the local tribes, (2) possible need. for protection by the Indian army, and (3) possible complications with other Powers. As regards the first, that is to Gay, the damage to our properties, I may remind you that we and our predecessors, Mr. D'Archy and the concessions syndi- cate, have now been opperating in Persia for more than twelve years without experi- encing any serious trouble, notwithstand ing the alarming reports as to the dis turbed state of the country which have from time to time appeared in the Press Our telegrams during this period. relations with the chiefe and the tribes in the districts in which our work is being carried on have always been of the most friendly nature and in our opinion there is little if any reason for uneasiness on this score, although there is good reason for continued careful handling of the mattar. Friendly relations are, no doubt, in a large measure due to the recognition by the inhabitants of the great material benefits still to be gained by them from the introduction into their country of British capital and energy, and in this respect our operations, which in addition to a large European staff, are now giving employ- ment to about 3,000 persons daily, have probably done more in the way of tran- quilising the part of the country in which we are working than has so far been accom plished by the gendarmerie forces in the whole of the rest of Persia. It is also to be recollected that the Persian Govern-disclose where it came from ment and the chiefs of local tribes are interested pccuniarily in the success of the company by means of shareholding I may add also that it may be confidently anticipated

that the railway and industrial developments which are now taking place in this part of the country will more and more tend to promote the prosperity and tranquillity of the coun- try. As regards the second possibility, that is to say, the possibility of the Indian Army being called in to protect na, this can only arise in the event of serious menace to our properties. All I need say in that connection is that we should here every right to expect protection from the British Government for so large a British enterprise, whether they are or are not financially interested in our undertaking, As the Times quite correctly points out,

He keeps hitching up his pants, and buttons and aabuttons his jacket, for he feels much more at home in Chinese clothes; admits that he understands the subtle delicacies of Chinese dishes far better than the juicy satisfaction of n beefsteak, gets on better talking with the Szechuen boys he has brought with him in their own lingo than with a China Press man in good English and finally feels quite nervous in the Astor House, for it is not at all like a Chinese inn

Mr. Gabb, when thirteen years old and after a five months voyage out from England in a ten elipper, bit Amoy. The place appealed to him, so he went ashore and, nothing else in the money earning Lice being available, he entered a school and started giving instruction to vener- able Chinese gentlemen who would have made his grandfather look young.

28 YEARS IN THE INTERIOR,

That was twenty-eight years ago and he has not seen much of the outside world since Nor does he particularly want to. For a long time he has been manager for a local life insurance company at Chang- king, but that place is getting too civilised and the work too easy and he wants bead- quarters to find him some place off the beaten track were an insurance policy has not been seen.

Naturally such a romantic individual, has seen things which very few in Shang- hai have, but to his own mind nothing can' compare with what he saw during a trip up the sacred Omi San mountain, from which he has just returned. Hear Mr. Gabb for half-an-hour on that trip and you will say that She and Ayesha." were just understatements of facts.

The trip up and down took him eight days-on another man's back, because that is the only way to do it if you are the sightseeing half of the couple. He left the foothills wearing the thinnest of clothes, and would not have minded leaving them off, and before he had got to the top he was in his very thickest fure and had seen a snow mound which nevér has melted and never will, because there is nothing up there to melt it.

A BLACK MONGOL TRIBE.. It is impossible to tell all the strange. He came across sights Mr. Gabb saw. thousands of pilgrims from all parts of the East, including a Mongol trike blacker than Jack Johnson, who had travelled nine months to do penance, and he saw an elephant four feet high, carved out of ivory, so old that the records cannot

He arrived at one temple where he found a sort of Trappist order of monks. and had scarcely spoken when he was ordered not to speak because it would upset the monkeys. In explanation, Mr. Gabb said: These monks have the wild monkeys of the district absolutely under subjection. There are thousands of the animale and on the 1st and 15th of each month, on the sound of a gong, they all swarm in and fetch their rations! The monks say that if any. unusual noise is made the monkeys come in to find out the cause."

Then, at night, he saw the famous ten thousand lights, a phenomenon which scientific men have not yet solved. Tens of thousands of coloured lights, like will-o'-the-wisps only they aren't dart all over the place. There, too, was the Suicides Cliff, which was really what Mr. Gabb went to sec.

These are just a few of the mysteries nature contemplated by the writer of the Times article in regard to the particular Mr. Gabb had to tell about, and there sphere in which our operations are being was much more, he said, which he could conducted. Another Presa comment which not tell in a year.. has appeared is one by a naval corres pondent of one of the newspapers in which

ho suggests that the Government should look for oil within the Empire rather than go to Persia. This is quite sound and very cogent so far as it goes. But to-day there is no oil field within the British Empire capable of yielding more than a very small proportion of the supplies required by the British Navy. nor is there any certainty that one will be found and therefore for the Govern ment to risk a loss of the Persian supplies on the off chance of sufficient oil being produced at some future time within the Empire by companies under British control would be a very grave mistake, particularly in view of the fact that the Kavy's needs are immediate and cannot await the uncertainties of the future." And failing the existence of sufficient supplies within the Empire what better source can be found than one that is so much under the sphere of British influence and so accessible to British power as Southern Persia

ABOUT

PILLS.

Many people have no hesitation in taking a dozen bottles of medicine in liquid form prescribed by a doctor, but view with alarm the suggesting to take a course of pills. This misapprehension is no doulit due to the impression that pills are merely purgative, which may be correct in some instances. Dr. Morse's Indian Root Pills, however, are not merely purgatives, acting upon the bowels only, but contain more important properties, which correct all disorders of the Blood, Liver and Kidneys, and the Stomach, evidence of which is not wanting. Thousands of testimonials sent us voluntarily and gratuitously verify our statements of what 'Dr. Morse's Indian Root Pills will do and are doing every day.
