THE LONDON, SINGAPORE ANT) JAVA BANK.
STEADY PROGRESS SHOWN.
The second annual general meeting of the shareholders of the London, Singa- pore and Java Bank, Limited, was held on May 22nd, at the registered offices, 4 and 6, Suffolk Place, Pall Mall, S.W., Mr. G. St. Lawrence Mowbray (the Chairman) presiding.
The Chairman said:-The directors' re port and accounts have been published, and have been in the hands of the share- holders for some days, and I think, there- fore, I may be permitted to follow the usual practice of treating them as having been read. I therefore propose the following resolution: That the report of the directore and the accounts for the year ending December 31st, 1913, be received and adopted, and that a dividend. be paid for the past year at the rate of 6 per cent. per annum, free of income tax, on the amounts paid up on 5,130 shares issued prior to December, 1913.

The steady progress of the bank's business for the past year is shown very clearly in the tabulated statement con tained in the report, and I think it is unnecessary for me to...dilate upon it to-day. The fact that in the second year of the bank's working we have earned in net profit & sum equal to 10 per cent. on our paid-up capital is in itself eloquent proof that, in establishing a bank to deal specially with the planting interests in the East, your directors bave acted with full knowledge of the needs of munity. Commencing business, as we capital privately subscribed and without any special effort to attract customers, it is satisfactory to us to find that in that past year the amount standing to credit of customers' current accounts has nearly doubled, and we have further proof that our business methods are appreciated from the largely-increased totals of ad vances made to customers on bills and other securities. -
To enable us to deal more effectively with the increase in our Eastern business, we are proposing to open a branch in Singapore and to add to the number of our agencies in Malaya and the Dutch East Indies

OPERATIONS TO BE EXTENDED.
Before appealing to the public
capital we have deemed it right to fo our business into working order and to demonstrato ita earning capacity in the hands of its directors. Having done this at a singularly inauspicious period, so far as planting affairs are concerned, we feel the time has now arrived when operations on a more extended scale may safely be undertaken, and, therefore, a resolution is to bo submitted to this meeting to double the authorised capital of the bank. A year ago we only had fully-paid shuros, but of those since issued 2,000 shares were subscribed on the condition that £5 only should be paid up And the other £5 remain uncalled to form a reserve liability, only capable of being called up in the event of the winding up of the bank. In this way a reserve liabi Tity of £10,000 has been created, while one-third of our year's profits goes to the reserve fund." In the issue of the further capital we propose to offer shares

ANOTHER TOKYO SCANDAL
WHOLESALE. FORGERY OF TRAMWAY TICKETS.
Some of the Tokyo papers publish an extraordinary story regarding the alleged forgery of tramway tickets to the value of several million yeni. It is stated that the fraud has been going on since 1904 and that a number of prominent political men are involved. An enormous number of commutation tickets are said to have been printed and disposed of, and it is further alleged that when the attention of the police was drawn to the fraud and investigations instituted, pressure was brought to bear by certain influential politicians in Tokyo and no further
action was taken.---
