China has so many girls Your presence to-day is the post proof that such ideas. belong to the past. until now we received only a few Jonations from Chiocel, but sizes have changed, as we hope. More than $3,000 has been donated to our building funds by the Chinese and we hope that the fire which has began to burn will not die and that you will show every year that you understand that China needs well educated mothers, as well as well educated fathers. We do not touch our girls foreign languages; we try to give them a good knowledge of their own language besides all the other things pupils in other schools in the Colony are learning. When they return to China dur girls will feel at home there and will help to build up Chine. To be able to do so, it is not enough to have a certain amount of learning, it is impor That is the aim of our education, to fant to have a fully developed character.

ensure that the girls shall be strong in distress and humble in days of good fortune, to be faithful to the Fatherland aad to know that they are in the world not for themselves alone, but for others. We try to educate our girls in these ideas. The small ones must help the smaller ones the larger is and the bigger the children

their cirole of duties. I am very glad to say that it is not hard to train our children in this way, as they thomsalves sincerely desire to become such women as we wish to make them. You all know the basis of our education; it is the Gospel. As our Saviour did not come into the world for Himself, so we, His disciples, endeavour to follow in His footsteps and work for others. We can not do this work of our own strength, cut of ourselves, but we must pray for disregard those who have another peint of view, but we endeavour to prove by our lives and actions that our way is the better one. May one word, said by Chiness preacher in our Chapel, always be the line of direction for all in this House: An inch of good example is better than a yard of good preaching

hoes, which had embroidered on the toes, in white silk, Civilisation, Buch civilisation is not brought to these children, but, they got training of the heart and they a potent all those virtutes which make good women and good mothers. Such mothers make a people great, but not strange glitter and undigested ideas. And that in the im unge value of this forms, and for that repson, I suppose, Lady May as a good mother, is so very much interested in this Home Let us remember the wonderful Eastern poem, which praises the mother higher than the Holy Mountain Meru of the Buddhists, to enable us to understand the full value of the work done in those walls

A mother's merits, who can say How inappreciable they? - A mother's merits, earth can bring Nought 'gainst them in the scale to weigh: -The fire-By's light is a lovely thing;

But these are bright as noon-tide ray, Wide is the air, vast heaven's arched ball; Yet they are narrow, they are small, With mother's merits when compared : The sea the stream the waterfall Mount Meru to its summit baredd Aro trifling, and unworthy all. Yis | Mothers' merits, high and trus; They can eclipse, outweigh, outvie The earth, with towering Mount Meru And the huge ocean and the sky. That this Home, having this aim always before it, may reap golden fruits, we wish most sincerely, now ask Lady May to lay the foundation-stone of the New School Wing:

Lady May was then handed a silver trowel by Mr. H. W. Bird (of Messra. Palmer & Turner, the architects), and after her Ladyship had smoothed the hed of cement, into which the foundation-stone into position, and Lady May after tapping it with a silver-mounted black- wood mallet, declared it to be well and truly laid. A tin box containing various records of the House was placed in a cavity in the stone.
