SUPREME COURT.
Friday, June 5th.
IN SUMMARY JURISDICTION. BEFORE MR. F. A. HAZELAND, PUISNE
JUDGE.
TROUBLE OF A MESS The hearing was resumed of the action In which Li Shiu Ki, trading under the style of the Pun Storo, sued S. McKnight, of the Naval Yard, for 81,056, 71, balance due on goods sold and delivered to the Naval Yard Mess.
Mr. G. Norrington (of Mr. G. K. Brutton's office) was for plaintiff, and Mr. Crowther Smith defended
In the witness-box, defendant alleged that the money for the purchase of goods was handed to the Chinsso steward. The money had always been handed to him, and if the debt was incurred it had been incurred by the steward, who had now left. Just before the steward loft he heard that he owed the store $200, but this amount was given to him with which to pay the Pun. Store, in the nature of a loán
Cross-examined by Mr. Norrington defendant said that there was a good deal of trouble in the mass when he was in charge, and he left. The trouble was over the 3200 which had been loaned to the steward without any authority.
The members refused to pay, did they not-They refused to make up the 8200 because they did not think it was right that the money should be fanned; it had not been sanctioned by the Commodore.
Did the menibers of the mess say that the Affairs had been carried on irregularly 3-Yes:
And I put it to you that both you and the manager of the canter have become rather unpopular?--I do not think so..
There have been several very storing moetings, have there not?-Yes, but that is not unusual
They protested against your conduct of the mess --No.
Then why did you leave the canteen tuanagership Because I had too much work to do at the end of each month.

One drawback from a residential point of view is the absence of shade. Some banians have been planted along the paths, but little can be effected without the co-operation of the land- owners."
