admit that they have been carefully considering the possibilities. One of the most interesting developments yet reported is the introduction into the Japanese Diet of Bill providing a subsidy for a new service by the Nippon Yusen Kaisha between Japan and New York through the Caual. The Bill pro- vides for a subsidy, of £10,000 per voyage for 17 voyages per annum, At present the Nippon Yusen Kaisha maintains a regular service between Japan and the Pacific Coast of North America, but has no service to and from New York, Owing to the closing of the Japanese Diet the immediate future of the Bill is uncertain.
So far the inquiries made by coaling. contractors have led to the belief that there will be very little scope for private firms. It is known to be the intention of the Canal authorities themselves to under- take coaling business, and though con- tractors may apply for leases of coaling grounds, they would have to carry on the business in the face of Government com- potition, At present apparently the Isthmian Canal Commission has only power to grant Teases that might be Tuvokable at any time. One of the largest British coal-contracting firms has now decided, after a careful investigation into the conditions, that there is nothing for it to do. The firm was at one time hopeful that there might be an opening, and one of the partners recently pro-
