YANGTSE INSURANCE ASSOCIA-

TION.

The 24th ordinary general meeting of the Yangtse Insurance Association, Ltd., was held on Friday at the Company's head office on the Bund, Shanghai.

Mr. John Prentice (Chairman of the Board of Directors) occupied the chair and was supported by Mr. W. Wright son (Deputy Chairman), Mesars, W, 9. Livingatone, Brodie A. Clarke and A. W. Burkill (Director), and Mr. W S Jackson (Secretary). There were also present:Messrs. T. A. Clark, T. M. MacQueen, 9 R. Burkill, W. S. David- son, G. D. Coutts, J. C. Dyer, A. Stott, G. Maxwell, A. S. Gubbay, D. W. Craw ford, J. Ambrose, H. J. Clark, J. Lid- dell, E, S. Kadoozie, W. A. G. Platt, Chu Chiu-sun, WH: Lunt and E. C. Pearce. In calling the meeting, to order, the Chairman said.

Gentlemen, There being a quorum present I will call upon the Secretary to read the notice convening the meeting and also the auditor's report.

This having been done, the Chairman: added-Gentlemen, before commencing the ordinary business for which this meet- ing is called I have to perform the sad duty of referring to the loss we and the Association have sustained through the doath of our old colleague on this Association's Board of Directors, Mr. James M. Young. Mr. Young was a Director of the Yangtze for 27 years and was Chairman for the last 20 years. He always took the greatest interest in the affairs of the Association with which he had been so long connected and I can -assure you we miss him very much.

I will now turn to the report and accounts for the year ending 31st Decem ber, 1913, and with your permission we will, as usual, take them as read,

Exchange and Investment Fluctuation Account This account shows & balance at credit of 850,749.22 against 88,864.48 last year. This increased balance is largely due to the lower rate of exchange ruling on the 31st December, 1913, as compared with the rate on the 31st Decem- ber, 1912, the rate of exchange for 1913 being 2/7.5/10 per Shanghai Tach against 2/10 0/10 per Shanghai Tael for 1912. A list of all the Association's Investments is on the table should any shareholder desire to see it

Due by agencies and premia in course of collection on the 31st December Inst amounted to $376,347.83, but since then- about $350,000, has been received, leaving only about $28,000 cutstanding at the present time.

I do not think there is anything more I need refer to in the accounts and balance sheet, and in conclusion, gentle men, it gives me very great pleasure to report the Board's continued satisfaction with the zealous and efficient manner in which the business of the Asociation has
