NOTES AND NEWS.

THE HONGKONG DAILY PRESS, SATURDAY, APRIL 25TH, 1914.

Sir Charles Bantley, who has just passed his eightieth birthday, made his debut so long ago as 1857. He was the first Valentine in Gounod's "Faust" on its first production in England, and also the first singer in England to take the title role in "The Flying Dutchman."

The announcement that the coronation of the Shah of Persia has been fixed for July 1st is a reminder that at least one European monarch has been content to roign for twenty-six years without any formal crowning. This uncrowned King is the present German Emperor, who succeeded to the Prussian Tizons fá 1868, and has never yet been crowned.

Sir Edward Gray was once the recipient of a sweeping compliment from Glad- stone. Mr. G. W. E, Russell visited the statesman in his retirement, and noted the conversation on past Parliamentary colleagues: We reviewed in turn Lord Spencer, Sir William Harcourt, Lord Rosebery, Mr. John Morley, Sir George Travelyan, and Mr. Asquith." The list ended, Gladstone remarked:- "But you haven't mentioned the most. important man of all-Edward Grey, there is the man with the real Parlia mentary gift."

It is amusing to compare, the business. like way in which The Times announced its reduction in price with the grand iloquent language in which it proclaimed its assumption of its present title in 1788. "The Times. What a monstrous name. Granted; for the Timer is a many-headed monster that speaks with an hundred longues and displays + thousand

characters, and, in the course of its transit in life assumes innumerable shapes and humours." The rest of the article consisted of what we should now call very scurrilous attacks on its rival, having demolished the chief of which it concluded with a 6ue as to the other public prints they appear as baving neither heads nor tails."

the Turkish Empire within its new fron- tiers. It had endeavoured to help to secure for all populations, races and religionis in. that Empire the guarantees of justice and freedom, and to enable France to obtain in Asia Minor, side by side with the other Great Euro pean nations, that share of 'economic advantages to which she had a right by virtue of the importance of ber material and moral interest and the ancient charac- ter of her traditions.

During the last fourteen years, since the Boxer troubles in North China, foreign merchants of other than French nationality have applied for permission to establish these three institutions, but The situation has greatly improved.

Banyuanhsien is safe. Sinufu is quiet their requests were invariably refused by Some towns and villages escaped pillage the Chinese Government on the ground by opening their gates and paying heavy that Peking is not a treaty port and that ransOIRS. Those offering resistance were foreign subjects could not be permitted mercilessly treated. The cruelty of the to own these industrial enterprises. The brigands everywhore is said to be appa Chinese in Teking are now agitatingling.. against the action of the Government, Many wounded from the towns and though their opposition, does not carry from the country districts are being weight at a time when all representative brought into Sianfu. : Some of the bodies have been dissolved.

It is rather curious to note that, upon the news of the nationalization of the Water. Works being made known to out- siders, the price of shares hus suddenly risen from a little less than $100 to over $130 for every $100 share. The best of these companies is the existing Electric Light Company, which has made some profit for its shareholders during the Inst few years with the exception of a short period in 1911-1912, when matters wore still unsettled.

PROSPECT OF TRAMWAYS IN PEKING, According to Chinese in Peking, the fit re prospect of the tramways is not so bright as that of the tramways in Tientsin or Shanghai, the reason alleged being that there are more officials in the capital than merchants, and also that the busiest part of the large city is outside the Chiunmên, while in lees thickly-populated parts there are about 39,000 rieshas the charge for which is much less than it is in Tientsin For Shanghai.

With regard to the Water Works, the company has not made any profil for its shareholders owing partly to mismanage wear and partly to the existence of för many private wells, the water of which is sold at a cheaper price than the water of the company.

For all these reasons, the majority of the Chinesa do not believe that the Frs. 15,000,000 to be loaned from the French Banque Industrielle under the name of industrial development is really intended for other invisible uses. As reported in iny last letter. the unusual success of the new. French Banque Industrielle is due more to the assitance of certain high and powerful officials bebind the scene than to anything else.
