Compared with the preceding year, an increase of 212 vessels of 684,128 tons and 200 vessels of 684,858 tons was shown in ontrics and clearances respectively.
Tho South Manchurian Railway O has chartered the str. Taipo Maru, 2,641 tons, and the str. Kenkon Meru No. 13, 3,482 tons, to be placed on the Company's Dairen Hongkong cargo service in addi tion to the Taisho Maru and the Daiten. Mare now on the run. The Taiyo Maru loft Dairon recently, with 1,000 tons Fushun coal, viê Chofoo, which has just been made a port of call. The exports froni Chefoo to Hongkong chiefly consist of ground nuts and bean noodles.
The P, & O. Sunda has been acquired by a Japanese Company of recent forma- tion at a cost of £16,000 or £17,000, and the probability is that, later on the Sunda, under a different flag, and a new nomo, will run to and from Japan and South America, the principal port of call being Santos, Brazil, The Sunda is going to Kobo to her new owners under her Cap- tain. the P. & O. Company, and was one of the first steamers of the fleet, if not the first, to inaugurate the intermediate ser- vice. She proved very popular, but is hardly suited to present day require ments. The Sunda was built in 1806 by Messrs Caird & Company, Limited, at Greenock, and has a tonnage of 4,874.
A Canton correspondent writes:- The Conference of homeward steamers hus to-day (18th inst.) reduced the rate of freight on Cussia to 30/- per ton to direct European ports-very likely as a first step against the Rickmers Line, whose first homeward steamer is said to be due in Hongkong in June.
The circular advising shippers of this reduction has been received by local exporters with delight. The business for, the main ship- ping season during May, June, July and Augnst mostly has been done at the old rate of 41s. 3d., so that exporters will unexpectedly make a nice extra profit on their forward sales at the cost of the Conference lines. In consideration of the recent bad times this reduction will come as a great boon to exporters.
The following notice has been issued to shippers over, the joint signatures of Meaars. Dodwell & Company, Limited, United States & China & Japan: Line, Shewan, Tomey & Company, American & Oriental Line, and the American & Mari- 'churian Line:-
"In view of the expected completion of the Panama Canal and its early opening for merchant tonnage, the under signed nasociated members of the New York Conference desire to make it known to shippers in the Far East that they will establish a service ri Panama to the Atlantic ports of the United States of America and to the Gulf ports, as required, in addition to their present service vid Suez. This is merely a pre- liminary notification, and in due course shippers will receive particulars of the new service."
