THE TIMES" AT A PENNY.

A NEWSPAPER REVOLUTION.

The announcement made by the The Times last month was in the following termos!

"In view of the grave importance of the present political situation, it has been decided that on and after Monday next The Times newspaper complete, including the Financial Section, shall be sold at One Penny por copy in Great Britain and Ireland and at Three Fence per copy on

the Continent.".

The Editorial staff of The Time, have never granted interviews, but, in reply to inquiries by a Daily Mail representa tive, the Publisher of The Times said that the reduction in the price of the journal was contemplated many years ago, but mechanical inventions have only now reached the stage when it is possible to issue the complete Times on the present superb paper at id per copy

NEW YORK, March 17th: Supreme Court of Rhode Island to Mrs. Robert Goelot has caused a sensation in fashionable society in New York. Mr. Goclet made no defence to the charges of extreme cruelty and gross who recited to the Court a long list of misbehaviour proferred by his wife,

"It is to be remembered that The Times is not only ore newspaper, but two The Times itself consisting of fourteen to twenty pages daily, and the Financial Section of six to eight pages daily.

"It should not be forgotten the The Times was the pioneer in cheapening the price of the newspaper.. Whest other journals were sold at 7d. and 8d." copy The Times was to be had at bid. It also must not be forgotten that The Times was the pioner of the publication of nett sales, which, I notics, is claimed by The Daily Mail. For many years The Timet gave the exact figures of its sales, but reased at the abolition of the Stamp Act.

"Printing House squar may further be said to be the birthplace of the half pongy Press. I wonder how many readers of your journal remember The Summary, a forerunner of The Daily Mail, which was issued from Printing House-square at a half-penny in 1883.

Mechanical improvements had not reached their present stage of develop ment, and we were only able to issue it in one long sheet unfolded. It obtained a very large sale. It was a kind of abbreviated reproduction of The Timura,

It is no secret that the sale of The Times has been steadily increasing for seven or eight years, despite the price (ed.), which hithert was equivalent to that of one penny paper and two half. penny papers per diem. Especially is the circulation increasing in clubs and read- ing rooms, and the system of The Times "Tent to read, by which a stationer lends The Times on hire to a certain number of people for an hour or asore per day, haz also extended again of late.

All the indications, therefore, polut to the need for the national newspaper being placed in the same positica as newspapers in other of the world's capitals.

Else where, of course, the penny paper tself has been practically submerged. The New York Times, Le Matin and Ze Journal of Paris, the Italian Corriere della Sera and the Chicago Tribune, are all sold at a half-penny.

"There is no intention whatever of pro- ducing The Times at a half-penny, though, as a matter of tact, its advertisement revenue has developed so greatly within the past ten years that the notion is not impossible,

"Newspapers to-day, as always, depend for existence upon their alvertisements.. When The Times was sold at ad.. it co- sisted of eight to ten pages daily. But at that period the paper alone for each copy of The Time cost as much as was received. from the newspaper vendors, owing to the expense of the manufacture of paper and the various taxes, thereon.
