THE Sieswship

In the case of the new courses, not once does it appear that an expenditure of less than some hundreds of pounds is contem plated, while in several it is likely that the cost will run to many thousands. At a very rough estimate somewhere shout quarter of a million of money is being spent as present in making or improving golf courses in the country, apart from the purchase of land. These facts and scores of others like them indicate clearly that mid-winter prognostications that the 1914 season would see the golf boom advanced to the most remarkable saper boom that any game has over known are already in process of fulfilment.

IMPROVEMENTS IN THE NORTH,

There are certain special features of this advance. One is a renaissance of goli in Scotland. Although it gave us the game and for many years had the best courses, the northern half of the kingdom for long past has been inferior to the southern, not merely in quantity but in the quality of its courses." Its weakness has been pointedly exemplified by the circumstance just disclosed that when two epurses were wanted in the Ayrshire districi, near to Prestwick, for the pur- poses of the forthcoming championship qualifying competitions two of the full length were not easily discovered, one of considerable reputation had to be reject because of its shortness, and eventually the municipal course at Troon had to be brought in for the purpose,

The 0.000 yards standard is not so well spected in Scotland no it is farther south and even those who believe-myself among ther that the fancy architecture has been vastly overdone must realise that in a large proportion of cases Scottish courses are too plain.

Recently I have played there much, and I say seriously that in some good features the course is unequalled among the inland courses of the world.

Every one of its eighteen holes is inter- esting to play, not one is the least arti- ficial in appearance, and yes I believe I am right in saying that there is not a the whole single artificial banker on course! Of what other inland course the same bo said ?

One of these, for a good example, is Monifeith. There are dozens of places in Scotland which may make little booms for themselves, as Mouifeith is likely to do if they display the right form of enterprise. But, after all, one of the most surpris ing features of the new extension of golf is the amazing rapidity with which it is progressing all over Europe and other

parts of the world. I have just been. making another golfing tour through the south of France, Italy, and other places, and some of the things seen were amazing. At Madrid they have now got their new £30,000 course completed, and they have applied a more remarkable system of water supply to it than I have seen at any other course in Europe, with the object of beating the very difficult Castillan climate.
