AWAKENED BY A LION,

SIR T. DEWAR'S EXPERIENCE IN EAST AFRICA)-

SNIFTING 18 BOOTS.

The narrow escape of Sir Thomas Dewar from a lion that prowled round his camp at night during his recent big game hunting expedition in British East Africa was related by him to a Standard repre sentative. The expedition was made because" said Sir Thomae, "I was tired of civilisation and wanted a change' After reaching Nairobi the expedition not out for the free ground where shooting is allowed to anyone possessing a licence. For two months life was spent under canvas right in the heart of the country where lions are often met with, and acom to have little fear of men,

They made as much noise at night ag the motor omnibuses do in the Strand,' said Sir Thomas. "Postma, the Dutch hunter who accompanied me, is a young map of 24 years, who does not know what fear is, and to him I owe much of the success of the expedition. He would onter the bush with the object of driving. out any, lions that might be lurking there,

the next day, from the covert four Jiors came out simultaneously--a magni- ficent sight. Lions in a natural state are much larger than those in captivity, being plump and fat, and well-conditioned in every respect They looked like shire horses coming down from the bush. Two of them were too far away for a shot, but one of the others Igot. We led down two zebra for bait about a mile apart and about a mile from the camp. The next day we found a leopard had been at one, as he had left his hall-mark, having bitten

general custom. We also discovered that lions had been fooding on the other zebra, and from appearances we concluded that three or four lions had been present. We therefore put the two zebra together and enclosed ourselves in a zarebu of thorn branches.

"We took up our position in the zaroba, And before dark we were aware of the presence of lions in the vicinity. A fioness appeared first. She walked back- wards and forwards very cautiously,

snifing the air all the time. She was full grova and, after coquetting with the meat for about half an hour, began eating, an was soon joined by another lioness who was followed by two fine lions. Postra, at a given signal, when I had one of the animals covered, switched on the electric lamp and I fired and got a fine full-maned lion, the others stampered off, but returned afterwards. I lay up for this kill over three nights and on the third night I got another lion..

A NIGHTMARE.

"Having had a strenuous three days' hunting and been sitting up most of the aights, I fell sound asleep after having kicked back part of the covering to allow as much ventilation in the zareba as possible. I awoke-1 cannot imagine what awakened me and looked down at my foot, when I saw the enormous heal of a lion sniffing at my boots. Lions had boent present in my mind for some days and some nights, and I first imagined it was a nightmare, but the reality of the situation flashed upon me as I continued. staring at the head. But I must have been still wondering if I was not in a nightmars wher the lion raised its head and looked me straight in the eyes, for. I was then thoroughly awake. His mane stood on end, his cars pricked forward, his mouth was open and I was conscious of his breathing. I was petrified. For what appeared to be hours, but right have been seconds, the lion stared mo cut there was something fascinating about it in one way, and it made ine lose my nerve but I was saved by suddenly grasping my rife, for immediately the animal gave I looked a big whoof and sprang off. out of the opening in front of the zarela, and sent him a right and left as he was disappearing, but missed. Extraordinary thoughts pass through my mind daring extraordinary incidents, and at that time I recalled an incident with a humorous side which I was told when I was in the Far West of America."

20,000,000 TMPROVEMENTE IN THE OLDER CANAL

Although no longer ago than January 1st the Suez Canal Company announced that the depth of the waterway had boon increased by one foot, to 20ft, it is understood, says The Evening Standard, that the canal authorities have already improvementa in hand which, on com pletion, will permit vessels of 28,000 tons, with a draught of 33ft to pass through the canal. This speeding up is no doubt duo to the approaching completion of he Panama Canal, for the Suez Company does not intend to allow its Pacifio rival to take any of its tonnage where they meet in competition.
