These are the cheerful remarks of Mr. Robert F. Moncrieff, of Newcastle-on- Tyne, who has just prepared an article dealing with the "National Tobacco Bill, 1913, which will be published in the April number of the Beacon Light," the official organ of the British Anti-Tobacco and Anti-Narcotic League.
Mr, Moncrieff quotes Government roturns putting the total expenditure on tobacco and appliances for the year at £82,003,631, which shows an increase of £1,770,508 over the total for 1912, the highest previously recorded. Mr. Mon- crieff holds that there is often no greater injury through the habit than is caused by the Fathers and others smoking in the presence of women and children, thus providing a possible reason for the paleness of face and delicate constitutions of the wives and children of smokers.
Regarding the present efforts of the working classes to obtain better conditions of living and higher wages, Mr. Moncrieff largely blames the workers themselves for the continuance of the conditions, con tending that every penny they spend in drink and tobacco is thereby prevented from circulating in other legitimate and beneficial trades.
