TOLD BY THE PARISH PRIEST.
A STORY OF CUBA
At Canasi, in the island of Cuba, there lives the Reverend Father Villanueva, a priest who like so many others of his cloth, is a "father in deed as well as in name to the members of his fook
The temporal well-being of the people among whom he labours is almost as mach a matter of personal concern to Father Villanueva as is their spiritual welfare. Hence it sense that he became interested in the affairs of the familly Bicre, with what result he has since narrated ne follows
Some time ago when I was parish priest in the village of Carlos Rojas there lived in the village a family of whom I was an intimate friend. The skiest daughter, a beautiful child twelve year of age, whose health was in a deli- ente condition, looked as if her life were fading away. She was so very weak nad so depressed in spirit that she felt no desire for anything lint solitude. E
“I loved and still love this family with all my son, and therefore soon took spon myself their misery, the more so when I learned that the doctors could not ascertain the nature of the child's malady. I went into consultation with several physicians deserving of all my con Bidence, but no one seemed to know what to do in so strange a case, the usual treatments to overcome the weakness having proved unavail. ing.

In some of the new coats the armholes reach nearly to the waist, recalling the old dolman style. The enc back is in favour for short or half-length coats. Anything seems welcome to those who devise the fashions that obscure the lines of the figure and hides what is graceful and shapely. Many of the now coats are short-waisted, with a quantity of super- fluous material gathered into the belt, and giving on effect of round shoulders to the wearer.
At about this time a few booklets regarding Dr. Williams pink pills for pale people came into my hands, and reading in them testimonials of similar cases I sent for a few bottles of pills and took them to my friend Mr. Julio Siere, father of the child. Vinon is used as much as ever for blouses, but as there must always be novelties, several other materials are introduccil. Tinsel broende is one of these In some cases it is combined with ninon of the samo ground colour, in others with silk. A green ninon has the broende in black spotted with gold, and is finished with gold face. A new make of crêps is also seen, often used double in A new feature, reminiscent of Mid- order to make the blouse more substantial, Victorian days and the now forgotten Garibaldi shirt, is the long shoulder seam reaching well on the top of the arm. Again, the sleeve, abandoning the kimono carried up in a polet that reaches midway form, is often set in with a seam and is between shoulder and neck. In some instances this seam is carried right up to the neck and turns over with the roll collar

At the opera a lady well-known in the PST CARDS, SEEDS, BOOKS, highest circles of society, the daughter of a duke, wore a headdress that almost com pletely covered her hair, and hung down in long chains of steel at the back. This portion of it might have been copied from the portrait of some warrior ancestor whose helmet was prolonged in long. strands of chain mail to protect the back of his neck from the arrows of the enemy. The young, fresh face looked charming enough in this novel headgear. Hor mother has often worn head ornaments original and quaint, and looked beautiful. in them all
