HAMBURG February 25th. RAILWAY RETURNS.

The German railway returns for 1812 that havo just been completed testify to a considerable expansion in every dírec- tion during the preceding ten years. The rolling stock consisted of £8,368 loco- motives, 62,180 passenger carriages and 648,000 luggage vans and goods waggons, an increase of nearly 40 per cent. in locomotives and over 50 per cent. in carriages

and waggons. The passenger traffic has increased in even a greater proportion, the receipts having risen from 577.31 million Marks in 1902 to 981.52 in 1912, equal to 70.5 per cent., 2.93 per cent. accruing from fast class tickets, 16.04 from second, 43.79 from third. 34.96 from fourth and 1.75 per cent from military ones. I may mention here that the fourth class carriages have been much improved and are Frequently retained for school treats and other excursions into the country, even by the well-to-do classes. The quantity of goods handled has like wise been much greater than in 1902, about 80 per cent. The receipts are stated as 2,264.24 million Marks
