The various departments of the medical THE SAME TO-DAY AS IN work have been steadily carried on during the year: The in-patient work becomes increasingly important and our best ener gies should be directed to improving
und extending the accommodation. The Nethersolo Hospital has been inadequate for the number of patients applying for admission and a scheme for extension has been under considerition which it is hoped will be carried out at an early date. There have been a number of serious cases admitted requiring immediate operation and in the majority of cases the permis sion was readily granted. This is in marked contrast to the experience of former years when consent to operation was commonly withheld until the period for successful operation had passed At the same time there is great necosity for educating the people to bring all cases, even those where life is not immediately threatened, for earlier treatment. Many cases of pulmonary tuberculosis are with in the out-patient department, but only a low cases are suitable for admission to a general hospital. Apart from the many deaths which occur annually in tho Colony from the discase, the number of livos rendered miserable through pulmon ary and other forms of tubercular disease is very great. From an intimate know- ledge of many Chinese families it is our experience that there are very few in which one or more members have not suffered from tubercular disease. Once more we urge the necessity for a sanatorium in which early cases could be treated; quite as important as the treat ment is the educational value of a sana torium for teaching the patients how to treat themselves and to spread the know ledge to others.
