The Chinese, in their present impecunious circumstances, are prepared heavily to mortgage the future, in exchange for trifling but immediate accommodation, and if we do not insist upon obtaining a share of what is going now, on their terms, we will find ourselves commercially in the cold hereafter. If the Special Commissioner whom the Board of Trade is sending out will carefully study the relation of these enter prises to the trade of the future his mission may serve some useful purpose. Anyone who takes a map of China and traces the route of this West River railway projected by the French will perceive at once bow it amenaces British trade in the region of the West River, and how likely it is to affect the traie interests of this Colony, unless action is promptly taken to protect it, and the warning given by The Times correspon dent is one which the powers that be cannut afford to ignore if they have due regard for the future predominance of British trade and influence in China.
