NAVAL Bffairs in almost any part of the world always possess a peculiar interest of their own in view of the necessity of maintaining unimpaired Great Britain's supremacy in this respect, but China has as yet Ecarcely succeeded in arrasting attention by her activity in this connection. She possesses, it is true, a Navy Board which from time to time gīves some reminder of its existence, and during the last year or so its activities have attracted a desultory interest. One of its early acts was an investigation of the condition of the fleet, with the discouraging result that China was found to have no more than five effective unite on which she could rely in time of war; later came the news of the Naval mission" of Captain CHRISTIAN and other British officers; and on February 1st of
