SCIENTIFIC MISCELLANY.
THE TRUCK THAT WALKS. Experiments with a curious kind of walking vehicle have been in progress a number of years, and the original pedrail steam road locomotive has developed into the pedrail motor truck and trailer, such a traia having been shown at the late Commercial Motor Exhibition in London. fect, Progress is made by numerous which driven by an endless chain of special design, pass from front to rear in a closely spaced row near the ground. The weight is borne by two or three feet on a side, the others near being slightly raised, and as a foot is passed to the new set of front, the lead shifts to s supporting icet. Each feat has a strong spring and a well articulated ankle. The spring of one foot is not sufficient. to carry the entire load, and when an obstruction is reached the foot is raised, passing the vehicle along without jolt. Pedrail trailing wagon are designed to. increase the motor truck's transporting capacity.

Hirsch, the build- ings lace South, a hill giving protection The from the North and Best winds, T spacious hospital balconies and all rooms of patients face South, and large folding doors permit complete exposure of the wards to the South East and West, Treatment consists of Incal and general exposure of the naked skin to sunlight, without any intervening glass. exposure is short at first, but is gradually increased to four or five hours onee or. twice daily, with some protection by The skia clothing on cloudy days.
with greatly becomes dark brown, increased vitality and resistance. In winter, the children lie naked on the open balconies, and the stronger ones wander about in the sunlit snow. The radiation from the snow in sanlight may reach 120deg, to 140deg. F., at a time when the shade temperature is at freezing point. Dr. Rollier claims that 90 per cent, of his patients are cured, others are improved, and deaths are few, the effects being attributed chiefly to ultra-violet rays.
HOW EARTHQUAKES ARE HEARD.
ww
Earthquake sounds have been invesli- gated by Charles Davison, in France, and are found to be pitched so low as to escape They are the notice of many persons. some such low rumbling as thunder, an explosion, or the noise of a passing cart. Severe earthquakes are beard over about two-thirds of the area in which they are felt; ordinary earthquakes, over about the same area; and slight shocks are heard The sound farther than they are felt, usually begins before the shock and Insta after it.
ECCALYPTUS LUMBER.
Trees of the blue-gum (Eucalyptus globulus) grown in the United States are found by the Forest Servics to be mainly unsuitable for lumber. Iu experiments carried on for two years, lumber of even fair quality was obtained only from occa sional selected specimens of the largest size.
A VERSATILE INSTRUMENT. The manometer, an instrument showing the elastic pressure of gases and vapours, has developed some novel applications in the hands of A. Henry, a physics teacher of Reina, France. A common form of micromanometer was employed, consisting of a U tube with wide- limbs joined by a horizontal capillary tube, the limbs carbon being about half filled with tetrachloride, and the capillary contain- ing a small bubble of air that was given considerable motion by any very slight differences of pressure at the ends of the

NITROGEN-VISING PROCESSES.
pregure
New processes for the fixation of nitro- gen from the air continue to be developed, and in the bulletin of a French society. dealing with a number of these, Prof. Camille Matignon notices especially two little known baes. In the process of Haber, nitrogen and hydrogen are com bined directly by the aid of a catalytic agent. The method of Berpek depends on the formation of aluminum nitrids by beating alamins and carbon in a current of nitrogen at 1,800deg, C., and is industrially promising because ammonia is produced by decomposing the nitride This process is for with dilute alkali.
