SORE THROATS:

Their Cure and Prevention."

Sore throat is so much it the air just now that everyone will be interested to learn how we catch this complaint, and the hest way of curing and preventing it.

Tlie germs which cause sore throat are literally in the air," We cannot help floating about on particles of soot, dust, etc.. inhaling these, and it is, therefore, quite accurate to speak of "catching" sore throat.

When we are in gond health we may inhale millions of these germs without taking harm. But if we are ever so slightly run down, the germs of sore throat will grow and multiply in the mouth cavity, inflaming and swelling the delicate membranes,

Then is the time to test the curative power of Walfing's Formamint, the germ-killing throat tablet.

These harmless, palatable tablets, sucked like swcets, destroy all germ growths in the mouth and throat. Therefore they first allay pain and then cure the complaint. By the same direct method, Formannt not only cures sore throat, but also prevents that and other infectious diseases like Diphtheria, Scarlet Fever, Measles, etc,

Formamint

THE GERM-KILLING THROAT TABLET

The unique power of Formamint as a germ killer has frequently been demonstrated. One of the most interesting proofs is that produced by Dr. Piorkowski, the famous Berlin scientist, which is illustrated by the above diagrams.

Dr. Piorkowski coated two glass plates with a substance on which germs thrive. One of them (Fig. 2) he also treated with some human saliva in which Formamint Tablets had been dissolved. He then exposed both plates to the air, and afterwards kept thein for three days at the temperature of the human body.

"Fig. 1, not having been treated with Formamint, was covered with germ growths which cause sore throat and other infectious diseases. But Fig. 2, which had been treated with Formamint, was practically free from germ growths, proving that Formamint killed the germs which settled there.

What happened on the second plate is exactly what happens in the mouth and throat of a person who sucks Formamint; namely, the germs which cause sore throat, etc., are destroyed.

Send the coupou to-day for a Free Booklet, which deals fully with the treatment of sore throat. Formamint is sold by all Chemists, in bottles containing 50 tablets. But specify Waifing's Formamiut, as there are many worthless imitations about.

THE ROMAN ADVANCE IN SCOTLAND.

Professor Haverfeld and Dr. George. Macdonald attended a meeting of the Society for the promotion of Roman Studies last month, and read papers, with lantern illustrations, on Some Ilecent Discoveries in Roman Scotland." Pro fessor Haverfield said that north of the district permanently or semi-permanencly occupied by the Romans in Scotland, á district whose northern point was a little beyond the town of Perth, there wer large earthworks which seemed to be of Roman origin. He had long wanted to explore then, and last summer he joined Dr. Macdonald in the enterprise, that gentleman having not only the same desire but funds to pay for excavations, distant earthwork in They chose Aberdeenshire, and found that it had been a temporary Roman camp for the accommodation of about 10,000 men. So it appeared that the scope of the Roman operations in Scotland was much greater than had hitherto been supposed. The afea of the camp was 120 acres, and the excavations were confined to the western end. Apart from a piece of extremely corroded iron, the only traces of occupa tion revealed were marks of burat soil, but ramparts and gates with their He hoped traverses were quite clear.

They might at least discover something which would tell whether this advance into a distant part of Scotland belonged to the time of Agricola or Severus. SIR FREDERICK LUGARD.

28

Sir Frederick Lugard's appointment as Governor-General of Nigeria, says London contemporary, will be greeted with special satisfaction by one man-the man who made Sir Frederick's work possible, and who first sent him re Nigeria. That man is Sir George Taub- man Goldie, but for whose foresight and perseverance Nigeria would be now either French or German territory. It was in 1877, when he first visited the Niger country, that Sir George Goldie conceived the idea of adding is to the Empire, and. the following twenty-three years devoted to that sole purpose. How he overcaine Garberta's attempts to fuftstall the British, how he defeated Bismarck's agents sent to stir up trouble, and with small support hom the home Government founded Nigeria, ia a story which has never been told at length-for Sir George is an Empire builder who does not advertise.

JAPAN'S FOREIGN TRADE.

SUGGESTED CHANGE IN PRESENT TARIFF.

Mr. T, Kano, Superintendent of the Yokohama. Customs, is quoted by the Hoch as stating that the Tokyo Govern- ment may abolish, or at least reduce, the protective tariff which was imposed thres years ago. To force the protective tariff to an extreme point, Mr. Kano thinks, will benefit only a few manufacturers, the chief result being the destruction of commerce and industry. Japan's foreign trado last year resulted in an excess of imports

amounting to over exports. Y.100,000,000. For a country like Japan, which is heavily in debt, this is a very serious matter. Mr. Kano attributes the excess of imports to the steady increase in the issues of convertible notes by the Bank of Japan, and the rise in the price It is true that of daily necessaries, Japan exports a considerable quantity of raw silk and babutao cach year, but the trade will never witness a reverse side until the Japanese attain further progress in manufacturing raw silk and exporting That it in its manufactured form." period is, he thinks, somewhat distant,

A GIRL STOWAWAY. DISCOVERED ON P. AND O. S.S. "ARABIA."

Girl stowaways are very rare, but they are sometimes found, and recently, says the Ad route of India, after the P. and O. At the latter place he took up with some woman and made the girl go out to work. The girl was passing the wharf where the Arabia was docked shortly before the ship sailed. REGULARITY OF THE BOWELS

The First Line of Defence against III-Health.

Only about one man or woman in a hundred is perfectly healthy. The other 99 have some digestive trouble, and perhaps more than 50 per cent of these could trace their trouble to that prevalent evil-constipation. Its a simple thing of itself, but like many simple things, it may grow and become complicated. Constipation is the root of nine-tenths of the sickness of man, and a large proportion of the sickness of women. Nature often requires a little assistance, and if this assistance is given at the first indication much distress and suffering may be averted. To maintain a healthy system the bowels should operate at least once every 24 hours. This is one of Nature's wise provisions which is too often ignored, and the result is untold suffering. Women and children are the greatest offenders, but. Dr. Morse's Indian Root Pills are a why such should be the case is a problem to be solved. remedy which, taken at the first indication, assist Nature to restore the system to health and strength, and avert the development of disease. Every ailment is the effort of Nature to get rid of some impurity in the system, and the object of medical treatment is to assist Nature in doing Dr. Morse's Indian Root Pills do this surely and thoroughly. To overcome constipation take one to four Pills regularly until the Bowels move daily, and are restored to healthy action.

So,
