RECORD SHIPBUILDING YEAR ANTICIPATED.

In the presence of a large company of gurata of the Taikoo Dockyard End Engineering Company, the S.S. Wuchany, built to the order of the China Navigation Company Ltd. for their Shanghai and Yangleze trade, was launched yesterday afternoon. The launch was timed for 4 p.m. and but a few minutes later Mrs. Edkins, wife of Mr. G.T. Edkins (Manager of Messrs. Butterfield & Swire), pressed the electric alarm. The vessel at once commenced to move, and so quickly did she gather speed that Mrs. Edkins had short time in which to swing and srash the champagne bottle: The launch was entirely successful, the ship entering the water quickly and gracefully amid much cheering, and the explosion of numerous crackers.

JAPAN'S LARGE CLAIM AGAINST CHINA

PEKING, January 14th.

The Peking Gazette, in a leading article, 58,185,39 states that the total Japanese claims for losses during the 1911 Revolution amount 8792,265.45 to approximately $11,000,000, which the -newspaper considers extortionate, and says that it is common knowledge that China was eoereed into admitting liability just before the conclusion of the Quintuple Loan.
