An elderly, well-preserved Chinese, possessing a smile that would not come

at the Magistracy yesterday to answer a charge of hawking Chinese medicine without a licence. The man produced a diploma, dated 2 years ago, certifying him as a surgeon on emigrant ships, and signed by Captain McEnen, then Assistant Harbourmaster, and Dr. Adams, the then Medical Officer. The defendant said he had been practising his "pro- fession" on board ships ever since, but now that he was getting old he had decided to remain on shore, and came to Hongkong for the purpose of continuing his work. Inspector Dymond said the man's appearance was a really good advertisement for his medicines if he used them. His Worship told the man to get a licence and allowed him to go on his promising so to do.

HALF A MILLION STERLING DAMAGES.

TWO SIGNALMEN PERISH...

LONDON, December, 22nd. A fire at Portsmouth Dockyard on Saturday evening destroyed a semaphore tower, and a number of documents dating back to the time of Lord Nelson were burned. A sail loft and rigging house were also destroyed. Bluejackets and soldiers worked their hardest to extinguish the damer, which flared up to 100 feet high on occasions and illumined the whole harbour.

The new battle-cruiser Queen Mary, which was moored at a jetty, was in jeopardy, embers falling on her decks The vessel was towed out of danger, and the fire was controlled at midnight.

Two signalmen at the semaphore tower, who had pluckily remained behind to send a general alarm message, are missing. It is practically certain that they perished. A third signalman managed to escape on the roof and was rendered senseless,

The fire was checked when it had reached to within eight feet of tanks con- taining 30,000 tons of oil.

The damages are estimated at half a million sterling.

Na credence is placed in a rumour that the fire was caused by Suffragettes.
