BATTLESHIP. DRIVEN BY OIL ONLY
FEATURES OF THE £2,800,000. WARSFITE,
Tho British battleship Warante recently launched at Devonport is one of five ressieds, preceded by the Queen Elizabeth, launched at Portemouth on the 17th ult and of which class the Malay, the gift of the States of that name, being built by contract, is a constituent,
They wes described by Mr. Churchill, in his statement to the House of Commons- on off fuel, as "oil only","

ROUND THE WORLD.
Exact details are withheld by the authorities, but the Waranite, is 640it. long, possesses a beam of Dift, and is soft. between porpendiculars. Driven with turbine engines, capable of develop- 60,000 specified horsepower, the Warspite should proceed at 25 knots, an increase of four knots as compared with earlier types of all-big-gun battleships,
Her turbine engines are to be geared, and from this innovation, for large warships, great things are anticipated. It is regarded as certain that the specifiod horse-power (25 knots) will be exceeded, but with oil there should be no difficulty in maintaining it longer than if the installation depended upon coal and oil or coal exclusively.
Eccoptscles have already been fitted in-board for the storage of about 4,000 tous of oil, a quantity which it is com puted will be sufficient to carry her round the world at a fair rate of speed.
Another notable advantage of oil fuel is the saving of quite 26 por cont, in stokehold weights, and au even greator saving in personnel.
ANTI-AKRIAL GUNS..
Apart from the outstanding feature of being among the first to rely ontirely on oil fuel for propulsion, the Warspite is amongst those vessels to receive the 15-in. guns. These will be eight in number, with a broadside weight of 15,600lb. weight of broadside of the first Dreaİ- nought, with her four 12-in. guns, was only 8,800lbs.
The
As to the secondary armament, the new have sixteen super-Dreadnought will 8-in. gans, whilst in addition she will carry several 12-pounder anti-aerial guns, She will be fitted with four tubes for 21-in. torpedoes propelled by heated air.. When ready to hoist, the peunant the Farspite will have post the country approximately £2,800,000.
As soon as the slipway now occupied by the great war vessel is vacant, it will he prepared for the reception of another big-gun. vessel to be styled the Royal Oak,
BATING A COCKTAIL,
A CANON ASKED IF HE WAS A POLYGAM IST,
The Rev. James Owen Hannay, better know to the literary world as George A. Birmingham, Canon of St. Patrick's Cathedral, Dublin, has arrived at Now York, to witness the first performance of his play in America, of "General John Regan
The American newspaper men have been a source of wonderment to the Canon, who is astounded at the questions they put.
"I was asked first," he says, "if I had ever been in jail, if I was a polygamist; I was asked to declare also what identifica tion marks I had upon mo. It must be very embarrassing for the real criminal, although I suppose he would not tell the truth.'
He had his first Amerciau meal in one of the Broadway restaurants, and, want ing something to drink, he noticed a canteloupe cocktail on the bill of fare. He ordered it, and, to his surprise, it was
