A FIBER OF OROWING DİPONTANCE.
Kapok fiber, a kind of silk-cotton, is already an important produet of Java and the Dutch Indies, and is being grown- also in Ceylon, British India, Central America, and the German Colonies in Africa Though formerly used only for such purposes as stuffing pillows and cushions, it is now being made-capecially in Germany-a valuable material for fabrics for mattresses, upholstering, ete The natural fiber is too smooth and brittle for spinning, but the difficulty has been overcome by the Emil. Stark process of treating with other or carbon disulphide and boiling water. As described by Julius Harraut, technical instructor at Weipert, Germany, the Kapok tree may. grow 100 feet high and 3 feet through, though under cultivation it usually roaches a height of about 60 feet and a diameter of 20 inches. The fenit develop- ing from the white or yellowish blossom is covered with a brownish fivefold husky and the fiber is obtained from the seeds in this husk. So far the fiber is separated- from the gods by a slow band process, no machine attempted having proved successful. The seeds yield about 25 por cont. of soap oil, and the refuse is used as fértilizer for foeding cattle.
