Copy of a letter from the Colonial Secretary to Chief Justice, dated 23rd June 1848.
"His Excellency desires me in reply, to enclose for your information extract of a letter from the Secretary of State on the subject of your Salary, by which you will perceive that agreeably to the instructions he has received, he is not warranted in issuing to you your full salary, as you did not return to this Colony until sixteen days after your office became temporarily vacant, but considering that you have only exceeded the stipulated period by so short a time, and as it appears you have also received from the home authorities your full salary for the time you were in England, His Excellency has been pleased to direct that...
