Victoria, 26th August, 1846.

Though I have not the honour to be personally acquainted with you, induced by a public exigency of moment to obtain your assistance if possible towards procuring a legal advice for this Colonial Government - the Attorney General is compelled by a severe disorder of the eyes, threatening blindness to go home.

Immediately and in the mean while we have no barrister in the Colony to take his place. Should there be any unemployed person at Ceylon willing to come here at once, he would receive £750. (half of the Attorney General's salary).
