THE REVERSE IN SOMALILAND.
OFFICIAL DESPATCHES,
RESPONSIBILITY FOR THE ACTION.
THE BONGKONG DAILY PRESS, FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 7tπ, 1913.
Further correspondence relating to affairs in Somaliland is published in the form of a Blue-book (Cd. 7006). The correspondence, which covers the period from April 30th, 1912, to September 8th, 2013, includes the official despatches from the Acting Commissioner, Mr. G. F. Archer, and his subordinates, dealing with the notion on August 9th at Dul Madoba bebwere the Sumaliland Canich Constabulary and a Dervish force, when the cismalties to the Camel Corps num- bered 36 killed and 21 wounded. Among the killed was Mr. Curfield, commandant of the Criel Corps, and among the wonted was Captain H Summers (26th King Georgo's Own Light Cavalry), of the Indian Contingent, King's African Rifles.
The responsibility for this reverse is ascribed to Mr. Corfield. tu a eom=" munientia addressed on September 5th to the Acting Commissioner by the Secretary of State for the Colonies Mr. Harcourt SILSK
t is evident that the whole respon ability for this ill-advised and disastrous setion must rest with the late Mr. Corfeld. He has paid the penalty with his life, and I have no desire to alwell on this aspect of the matter. But 1 aw compelled, if only in justice to the other officers concerned, to recorit my opinion that the disaster is das to his complete disregard of the instructions issued by his Majesty's Government. by Mr. Byatt, and by yourself.
fully endorse your remrles with regard to the conduct of Captain Summers and Mr. Dune, and request that you will convey to the latter officer my warm, commendation of his coolness and courage during the action, and of the dispositions which he made for withdrawing his force after the engagement. 1 shall canse Captain Sumners to be informed of my appreciation of his services on his arrival in this country,
It gives me much pleasure to convey to you my unreserved approval of your. own proceedings as reported in your despatches.
CAPTAIN SUMMERS REPORT.
With regard to the actual 6ghting, Captain Summers' report of the action, Gated Sheikh, August 15th, shows very clearly the course of events and the particulars in which, in his opinion, bir. Corfield's judgment was at fault f
1 arrived in Burao en August 6th, 1919, in command of a small party of the Indian Contingent, King's African Rifles, as escurt to his Majesty's Acting Com missioner. At about 1.30 p.m. on August 8th, 1913, a roport was brought into Barao. tint dervish raiding parties were looting stock, and burning kurias (tribal enesmp- ments) in the locality between Ber (18 miles south-east of Burao) and Idoweina (16 miles south by east of Ber) At 2.30 pm., owing to representations made by Mr. Corfeld, commanding Camel Constabulary, his Majesty's Acting Com missioner sanctioned his procceding in the direction of Ber in order to watch developments. He was instructed under all circumstances to refrain from com- tilting himself to an engagement with any considerable foron of dervishes."
A zariba was formed within sight of the dervish watch-fires and scouts were sent out. Mr. Corfield then consulted Captain Summers, who continues his report —
In view of the instructions of his Majesty's Acting Commissioner 1 strongly advised him to content himself with making a reconnaissance of the dervish enrampment, holding his camels in readi nose for withdrawal oa. Burao, and leav- ing behind him patrols to give him early in formation of the dervishes' movementa at dawn; and I told him that, with the force at his disposal, he had, in my opinion, no prospect of carrying out a successful action against the derviahes. He was, however, clearly determined to. operate against thein, and decided to carry out his plan of cutting off their retreat. early on the following morning, and sent a message to the Commissioner about 10.40 m. apprising him of his inten- tions."
Mr. Corfield then made his preparations for engaging the enemy, and disposed his force in line, a strategy which appeared faulty to Captain Summers, who advised the formation of a square.
· THE ACTION.
The action, which began at 6.50 a.m. on August 9th, is very fully described by Captain Summers:-
Almost on the first shot being fired I noticed the friendly tribesmen on our left Bank immediately turn and seek safety in the bush which was in their rear; from this time they tock practically no part in the engagement..
