Taxes proper.. 102,907 67,695 2,795.
The collection of these taxes did not begin until 1910-11, in which year arrears for 1809-10 werd included. Thus in four years the taxen have yielded precisely 223,237, whereas, according to the Chan-
cellor of the Exchequer'stimates, they
should have produced 21,195,000,
A fourth tax, Mineral Rights Duty, which is virtually an additional income tax on mines, bae moved backwards. It yielded only £273,910 in 1912-13, against £438,193 in 1811-12 and £500,290 in 1910-11, Taking all the four taxes together there. Eag: been steady decline each year, from £509,025 in 1910-11 to £490,888 in 1912 and to £486,722 in 1012-13. For the heavy fall in 1912-13 tho exame offered is that the statistics are incomplete, that a reduction has been mado in the assessments owing to the loss of royalties during the coal strike, and that permanent deductions have become necessary as the result of a decision of the courts
NEW LONS TO THE PUBLIC
The cost of the valuation machinery for levying the first three of these taxes was stated by Mr. Lloyd George at £1,803,000 up to the close of 1812-13, and at £680,000. for 1913-14. Thus up to the end of 1012-13 the balance sheet stood thus:-
C1,893,000 208,237
Cast of valuation
Yield of land taxes
Net loss to the uation... £1,169,763
Mr. Lloyd George declared in his Budget speech of 1909 that these taxes will produce an appreciable revenue in the present year and more in future years, On July 7th, 1000, with reference to the undeveloped fandt duty and its effect on market gardeners, he said t
What does it matter to the market gardoner? He will get his old-age pension secured and he will get Dread noughts to secure his garden from being trampled upon by German artillery. At Newcastle on October 9th, 1000, be declared that these taxes and the new order of things which they ushered in
