"When I was Acting Attorney General, Mr. De Mello and Mr. Shortrede consulted me about the affair of Pacheco against yourself, and offered me a retainer which I refused, telling them that their case would fail because of the lapse of time since the fact complained of was committed. I was afterwards retained by you, which retainer I returned when I became Acting Judge. Whilst still speaking to me about hurrying this case to trial as it was a source of annoyance to all parties concerned, Sir John Davis and Major ... were always making representations to me. I took it that Sir John was as much interested in the case as yourself, and that he would make it a Government matter. In consequence of these representations, I advised Mr. Parker to proceed with the
