The postage stampa of Britain's eastern ally, Japan, while possessed" of a high degree of philatelie interest for the specialist, are of too complex a character to tœconie really popular with the rank and file of collectars, Consequently, the early issues in particular are neually but | poorly represented in the average stamp album.
Chief interest in the earlier issues lies in the opportunities they provide for plating, but for the general collector there is also considerable attraction in the study of the symbolismu expressed in the designs of the Japanese postage stamps, and to this and every collector should
obtain endeavour to
a representative display of the various types.
It was in March, 1871, that the Japanese postal service was organised on modern lines, and the first issue of postage stamps was made. A postal system of sorts had been established so long ago as the reign of the Empress Jingo (202 A.1)), which was brought to perfection in 646 A.D., but owing to internal disturbances in the end of the sixteenth century. country was practically suspended at the

The national flag of the Japanese nation depicts the rising sun, and on the third, design, including stamps from 15 too sen, this well-known ball of red is depicted. One might well have expected so fanions an emblem to have appeared it the postal designs at an earlier date.
LONDON STAMPS FOR CHINA.
I am informed by Messrs. Whitfield King & Co.. that my supposition that the new Chinese postage stamps were the work of the Peking Bureau of Engraving and Printing was incorrect, and that the stamps were actually produced by the well-known London firm of Waterlow & Sons, who have been responsible for all the regular issues of China since 1898. Specimen copies have been circulated the new ba stamp of Antigua, bearing the head of King George, adapted to the frame design of the Edwardian issue. Four additional of the Georgian postage stamp series of the Somaliland Fro tectorate, viz., 2, 3, 6 and 12 anuas, are also announced.
The new issue for the Gold Coast, which is to appear at the end of the present year, comprises twelve values, eloven being in the general Postage and Levenue key-plate type, and the Id. kaving the King's head adapted to the distinctive frate design originated in 1909.-Dalg Mail.
