In the middle of the Feast, the PRESIDENT delivered an address in which he said: It is with great reluctance that we despatched soldiers in the front on the rising of the southern rebellion, bu all will agree to this step was inevitable If foreign countries, the troops are maintained for the purpose of combatting with hostile fores. It is a deplorable fact that the troops of this! country had to sght against their own countrymen, Ind we ennät avuzdat The foreigu Powers are very auxions to find out whether the Government. is strong enough to preserve order in the country. If the rebellion is not suppressed imme-. dintely, great danger will beset the country both intromilly and externally, Generals Feng and Tuan have rendered invaluable service to the cointry by putting dowlithe revolt in su short a period. However, by this campaign our soldiers have demonstrated theinselves to

It is a great pity that a certain section of the soldiers disregarded military dis cipline, disturbed the people, and thus tarnished the good name of the railitary of the nation. In the future, we hope. efficient military training will be accom- panied by education.

General TUAN replied: We thank the President heartily for the honour hé con- ferred on us, but we wish to say that our success has in 1. great measure been due to the sagacions counsels of the President and the General Staff and the valuable assistance of the N. 46 How- ever, we have accomplished two things, Firstly, the soldiers have proved their power to entary all manners of hardships and have acquired some experience to this campaign. In the future, we hope to make our army more efficient. Secondly, all obstacles to the adoinistration have been removed, and we hope that the Government can now proceed with the building up of the country without encountering any untoward interrup- tion."--'cking Daily News.

THE PIRATE'S SECRET.

During the captivity of Napoleon.on St. Helena the British Government, under the influener of a sudden access of precautionary seal, sent a company of soldiers from the Lape to occupy the island of Tristup PAcunha. They were recalled before the death of the Emperor, and all of them bailed with joy the mid of their dismal exile, all with the excep tion of a certain Corporal Class, whose time had expired. He asked," says the Inarual des Debla. for leave to stay. His example influenced another married soldier, and their two households pro- : corded to form a colony on this last oulpest of civilisation.

In the Gulgten, with the Duke of Edinburgh on board, anchored off the island and was visited by the descendants of the soldiers, she of whoon, a son of.. Glass, told the officers of the Golcio a quer story.

When the English detachment from tie Cape reached the island they found a strange solitary being, a real Turn of Athus, who seemed much annoyed at having his solitude distarbed, and studi- ously hid himself. A watch was kept, and he was see one night Apparently earrying a heavy land. Two or three times afterwards he was noticed at the saar job, and he always disappeared tvben he felt that his movements were

perceived.
