BACK TO THE KAST. Leaving his occupation as fruit farmer, Capt. Brodhurst once more gave his attention to the sea, and again was familiar figure in the porta of the East. He owned his own ships for long, but some fifteen years ago in the course ofi a pyphoon which wrought have along the whole coast, was wrecked on. Formosa. So force were the winds that they are said to have actually blown the masts Mrs. Brodhurst was joud of the ship..

Capt. Brodhurst, whe had been for about two months, is survived by a widow and daughter, the latter being Mrs. F. D. Burton. It is of interest to note that Mrs. Burton was the first foreign child Born on Riverside Colony.

THE CAUSE OF BERI-BERI.
A PRACTICAL EXPERIMENT.
Dr. Max Moszkowski of Berlin, who
won
distinction by his scientific researches in New Guinea, succeeded in giving himself an unmistakable case of Béri-beri by living for 18 days upon a diet consisting almost exclusively of bulled rice. He believes his experimentz support the theory formerly held by him that beri-beri is a disease induced by
certain foods and not due to an infection of any kind from without, as has beco 'maintained by many investigators.
Dr. Muszkowski, who in 1911, advanced his theory in an address before the Berlin Medical Society, reported at the society's last necting the results of the experiment which he has just finished. After a few weeks of hulled rice diet the nervous dis turbances accompanying beri-beri ap- peared, and the case was then diagnosed as beri-beri by Dr. Schuffner, the noted authority in this line. The typical dropsical affection of the skin followed. soreness of certain groups of with muscles. stomachin disturbances and eventually the typical and dangerous irregularities of the heart action.
Dr. Moszkowski theo treated himself with injections of an extract prepared from rice hulls. As recovered rupidly and is now quite well. Injections of this extract also cured pigeons and heus which had become affected with beriberi after a hulled rice diet.
· Dr. Moszkowski believes the hulled rice
contains a poisonous substance which is neutralized when the hills also are eaten.
