Most Illustrious and most excellent Sir,
In reply to the Despatch which Your Excellency was pleased to address to me on the 4th Instant, and in which in consequence of Marçal and others having claimed in the Supreme Court of Hongkong, damages and indemnification from the Magistrate of Police, who by the Judge pursuant to a demand made to one of Macao, and referred by me to Your Excellency, had ordered their apprehension in Hongkong, Your Excellency requests to be informed upon the principal circumstances relating to those individuals after their delivery to me by Your Excellency.
I beg to state the following:
João Marçal having been apprehended here in March last year on a charge of embezzlement, and it appearing in the course of the proceedings instituted against him on the 26th August of last year,
