THE HONGKONG DAILY PRESS, THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 11TH, 1918
WATERPROOFING PROCESSES:
THE DISCOVERIES OF A TALENTED LADY.
The Viking Manufacturing Co., ltd., gave an interesting exposition, at the Hotel Cecil, says The Financier, to a party of journalists and others of the new waterproofing, and other processes associated, with the name of Mr. Erncat Hart. That talented lady explained at some length the character and commercial value of the improvements and develop- ments which she has achieved in this some- what occult branch of manufacture. She is essentially a "now woman" in the higher sense of the term, and her activities go back to the days when scientific yomon were not taken quite seriously. She was the first of her sex to matriculate as a medical student in the Society of Apothe caries and came out third on the honours' list. Subsequently she became one of the sixteen daily medical students who formed the first mediest school in London, now attached to the Royal Free Hospital. Hor later achievements include:-Organisation of singing and orchestral classes in the poorest districts of London; training the peasantry of Donegal to produce high- class and marketable good; extensive travelling in the Eastern and Western worlds, and descriptions of Burma, Japan and the West Indies. Sinen 1808 she has given a vast amount of work, and study to the subject of fibre and its treatment. She Is succeeded in degumuing Ramic abre, a result formerly believed to be impossible, and she discovered a means of weaving it in combination, with flax.
These were no mean achievements, but her efforts did not end there, She has evolved
别 patented process for water-
proofing fabrics, ropes, yarus, etc., and
colouring the materials in the same

[operation. Another remarkable invention | THE HONGKONG TYPHOON, Sept.
is a process of fireproofing, fabrics, paper and other things.
It is claimed that the most diverso materials can be waterproofed by the pro- cesses used. Not only the daintiest and stoutrst fabrics, but materials for pontoons and collapsible boats are amen fable, and can be preserved from rotting. Hospital sheeting, as treated, can be boiled and disinfected, and tent canvas nced no longer be thick and heavy, Also, wall papers enn be rendered washable, and outdoor decorations impervious to rain. And the navies of the world can be supplied with ropes which are unshrink- |able, unfreezable and fireproof. Another curious application of the inventions which may, perhaps, become of import- ance, is the waterproofing of bank-violes, bonds, certificates, etc., which it is declareci, are rendered at the same time proof against forgery.
In the course of Mrs. Hart's interesting description of her processes, she depre cated the idea of being regarded as a
inventor, but rather claimed to be an improver. We understand that already the Viking Manufacturing Company, is carrying on a business in some, at least, of these new processes, but as yet, we understand, Do, ocular demonstration of the results has been publicly shown. ff, however, the statements made can be realised to the full, commercial import- ance is indicated.
TITANIC MYSTERY.
REPORTED DISCOVERY OF PART OF THE WRECKED LINER.
The Philadelphia correspondent of the New York World says: The possibility. that the Titanic struck a submerged ledge as well as an iceberg is raised by the report of Captain Rennant of the British steamer "Lariline, which arrived here sotte days ago.
www
Captain Remnant says he discovered a wreck standing on end a few feet above the water of the Grand Banks, New- foundland, practically on the spot where the disaster occurred.
